1/2 An Adder on a very cold day.
As a Northern Bloke I had to put my 'Big Coat' on before I set out today - more in hope than anticipation of finding a snake.
I had a location in mind that was shielded from the brisk NWly by thick gorse - it didn't disappoint.

They can quite happily bask together. I've seen some curled up on top of each other in the past.

Signs of spring can come in so many forms. One of my favourites is finding the first basking Adders of the season.
After my success finding the melanistic 'Black' Adder last week, I searched another part of our local heathland and found these two beauties together ❤

Adder - Vipera berus - op een bospad. Het is een jong vrouwtje, ongeveer 20 cm lang en iets meer dan een halve centimeter dik.
#VandaagGemaakt in de Drentse #natuur. Deze mooie jonge meid lag gewoon op het bospad te chillen. Niet helemaal zonder risico want #adders - Vipera berus - tref ik nogal eens doodgereden. Zo'n kleintje valt ook helemaal niet op.

Lovely morning watching a bunch (six in total) of #Adders (Vipera berus) jostling for the best basking site - always a privilege to watch them without disturbing them as they go about their business
When I was out on Martin Down earlier in the week, the Gorse seed heads started loudly popping open in the heat.
I knew then that it was too late in the morning to see a basking Adder....
An Adder always like to bask with thorns at it's back & the early morning sun at its front.

As May progresses & the ambient temp. increases, Adders need to spend far less time basking to reach an optimum body temperature.
Here an Adder emerges, as the sun strikes it's basking spot, (Bottom R).
Increased veg makes them difficult to see.

It really was & so great to see the snakes out basking even though there was a really cold wind blowing.
Last year I found this male & female lying out together in March, in the same field margin.
The Gorse behind them helps to provide with some really safe sanctuary.

Never seen an adder before so it was a privilege to see several, both female and male and learn more about them. They are thriving at this particular nature reserve.

It's interesting that these animals have all chosen basking positions behind 4x4 sheep fencing here on the Prawle peninsula.

Lovely to see this 45cm male Adder lying out near the coast path at Prawle Point just now.
The sun had actually been almost too hot for a basking Adder at midday, but this one was lying in a more westerly position in rather cloudy conditions.
