Another piece in my ‘Vast’ series.
“12x24” mixed media collage.

An expansive prairie wetland, an incredibly important part of our landscape here in Alberta. One of my favourite places to be.

A digital illustration of a wolf and a horse intersecting. Each is portrayed in profile, the horse from the shoulder up and the wolf leaping with only the body, front legs, and head visible. The horse, facing left, is a bay, with an unkempt mane that is mid-length. The wolf is leaping to the right, and is a black wolf, with clay-brown tones in the dark fur.
The illustration merges in the middle in a manner reminiscent of stained glass, with the wolf and horse blending into each other in sections that alternate between depicting the texture of the wolf and horse. Both animals' heads are clear of this merged area. Behind them is a nondescript background that suggests a location in the foothills.

The inspiration for the piece is drawn from the hatred wolves and feral (wild) horses in North America elicit from industry, most notably cattle ranchers. Both are blamed for the decline and killings of herd animals, but both animals existed on the land long before the domestic cow. The piece is meant to invite contemplation over wildlife's right to exist in the face of human desires and needs, whether those species have always been here, or if they returned after a long absence. As the viewer may or may not know, horses evolved in North America, but were extirpated as a result of the mysterious dying off of North America's megafauna. They were brought back by colonizers thousands of years later. A black wolf was chosen specifically because wild wolves that have black coats are thought to bear this colour due to interbreeding with domestic dogs roughly 45,000 years ago. This further expands the theme of what humans consider "wild", and what they consider "domestic", what that means to us, and why it matters.

Hiked my painting gear the 22 km into the Fryatt Valley over the weekend. What a beautiful spot. Frosty overnight, hot days, and cloudless skies - a rare treat in the Canadian Rockies.

I was able to get in the studio one last time before the #Calgaryexpo. A selection of true classic toys for any #StarWars fan. I had way too much funny painting these 4. They are 9.5x9.5 inches and in acrylic on board ready to hang. #yegart #yegartist #albertaart #candianart #realism #vintagetoys
