Endosperm condition (homogeneous vs. ruminate) can vary within a genus. The seeds of Yucca aloifolia are clearly ruminate, but many other species of Yucca lack rumination & are homogeneous. #Asparagaceae #seed #endosperm #ruminate #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

This is Dracaena goldieana, a species from tropical Africa. Itโ€™s easy to see why this species is a popular ornamental plant. That foliar variegation is outstanding! #Asparagaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Fruits of #Dracaena are berries: fleshy, colorful fruits with several seeds. These are surely consumed by animals, who disperse the seeds & likely account for the wide distribution of the genus. These fruits are D. surculosa, a species grown for its spotted foliage. #Asparagaceae #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Dracaena has at least 3 kinds of inflorescences. Some have unbranched racemes, others have branched racemes, & another group, like this D. pethera (Sansevieria kirkii), has dense umbels. The flowers open at night, have a sweet fragrance & are moth-pollinated. #Dracaena #Asparagaceae #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Dracaena has a handful of species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. They are likely descendants of a single introduction via long-distance dispersal from Asia. This is D. konaensis ๐Ÿ“ท: Grigory Heaton CCBYNC4. #Dracaena #Asparagaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

This is Dracaena cubensis, endemic to Cuba, & 1 of just 2 spp of Dracaena native to the Americas (the other is D. americana of C. America). It is a xeromorphic species restricted to ultramafic soils in the eastern part of the island. #Dracaena #Asparagaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Like its cousin from Socotra, Dracaena draco produces a red resin that was sold as the dried blood of a dragon. Plenty were phlebotomized to meet the demand for this potent nostrum. You can see the color of dragonโ€™s blood in this old leafbase. #Dracaena #Asparagaceae #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Dracaena includes plants formerly placed in Sansevieria & Pleomele. Itโ€™s popular in cultivation, & Iโ€™m not the only one who has a collection of various species & cultivars. The genus is widespread but most species-rich in Africa. #Dracaena #Asparagaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Agaves are known for their big bang reproduction: They grow for several years, flower spectacularly & die. Most botanists say that agaves that make vegetative offsets are not truly monocarpic. One rosette dies, but the plant survives. ๐Ÿ“ท: Agave attenuata. #Asparagaceae #monocarpy #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Experimental evidence for the sterile flowers on the top of the Muscari armeniacum (๐Ÿ“ท: Andreas Rockstein CCBYSA2) suggests that they are not an extra attractant to the flowers. Instead, they may simply be vestigial flowers that donโ€™t develop fully. #Asparagaceae #pollination #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

This is Muscari comosum (๐Ÿ“ท: Jean-Marc Linder CCBYNC2). Fertile flowers are not showy, but the purple tuft of sterile flowers certainly is. The tuft ups the attractiveness without promoting geitonogamy (flowers in the same inflor. pollinating one another). #Asparagaceae #pollination #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Leaves, even sword leaves, can be liabilities in harsh climates. They lose water too easily and overheat. In (evolutionary) response, some plants coat their leaves with thick, fuzzy hairs or reflective, water-tight wax. This is Agave potatorum of Mexico. #Asparagaceae #defense #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ

Bracts are modified leaves, so they arenโ€™t the same shape/size as leaves but can still be photosynthetic. The bracts of Agave bracteosa (so named because it is so bract-y) subtend the flowers on the inflorescence. They have long-extended (caudate) tips. #Asparagaceae #bracts #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒฑ
