Pen and watercolour sketches from RSPB Saltholme, Northeast England - Great Crested Grebe, Reed Buntings, Chiffchaff, Goldeneye, Spoonbill, Marsh Harrier, brooding Heron, Great White Egret and Greylag Goose.
Drawings from a recent visit to RSPB Saltholme, Teesside, NE England; the highlights, though, were what I didn’t see - Cetti’s Warblers every few yards along the path and a booming Bittern (more like an echoing ‘bomp’, in my opinion.)

Photo of a gull with dark brown cap
Gull at Saltholme yesterday - seems to have more head colour than the usual black-headed, but too brown for Med - possibly a hybrid?

It's #SuperSeabirdSunday!
As an arctic bird lover, one of the ultimates is this adult White-Billed Diver that showed incredibly well at Blyth Harbour last Sunday.
A brute of a diver!

A not-completely-exhaustive illustration of our winter shorebirds, but these are the species that you’re most likely to see during winter around Teesmouth (northeast England).

We started the new year with a trip to Big Waters, Northumberland. Sadly, we dipped the Icleand Gull as this was the day it decided to turn up very late. We did see some quality birds though.

A solitary whooper swan near Newburn Bridge, Hartlepool today. Unusual to see one by itself, hope it’s ok.

After six hours, and some peer pressure to stay, the Pechora Pipit eventually gave good but brief views early evening. An insane record.
Whoever tells you to say "no" to peer pressure, must be someone happy with mediocre views!

Watercolour painting of two young Oystercatchers, heads down and bills open, striding stiff-legged across rock pools and washed-up kelp.
A couple of young Oystercatchers on Redcar beach, practicing that weird walk they do whilst making loud peeps. It’s clearly a very serious and important business, but I always find it funny to watch. (Watercolour painting.)
