Who needs a figurehead when you can have matching vultures on either side of your barn? Oliver and Gladys have definitely become some kind of mascot. They’ve been around at least 15 or 16 years.

We crossed paths with a wake of black vultures (Coragyps atratus). Though there were more in the group, these two happened to be the only ones halfway in focus. They were feeding on the remains of some fish—how the fish ended up there remains a mystery.

This is our mated pair that nest in an old chicken coop on our property. We believe the male is the one on the right, and the female on the left, but black vultures are not sexually dimorphic, so unless we catch them mating, we don’t know. The one on the right is completely comfortable with us, and they sit on the roof and watch the sunset. They’re so cute.

As far as we know, we definitely have one nesting pair in the old chicken coop, and we may have another pair in another building. They’ve been nesting here for generations.
