Bolton Castle. Old stone quadrangular castle on a grey day. Construction was completed in 1399. Mary Queen of Scots was held there in 1568 for six months. It is still in owned by descendants of the original family.

Plenty of stone here at #BoltonCastle in Yorkshire. I've visited there twice now - 2008 and 2021. They did a lot of work on it between those visits!

This is Bolton castle in Wensleydale. Famously, Mary Queen of Scots was held captive here and the story goes that she escaped, heading for Leyburn, only to lose her shawl on the way. The route is now known as 'the shawl'.

The windows are leaded but not stained glass and two white chairs sit in the alcove which is also painted white. It is a very calm space.
