Kabayama Sukenori 樺山 資紀 was the second person to head the #NavyMinistry. Born in 1837, he joined the new #ImperialJapaneseArmy in 1871 as a Major, a credit to his previous combat experience in the #BoshinWar. He was head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police from 1881 to 1882. 1/4
Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 was one of the founding fathers of the #ImperialJapaneseNavy and one of the most colorful characters of the #MeijiRestoration. He was a member of the #Tokugawa Clan and so was on the losing side of the #BoshinWar. He was declared president of the Republic of Ezo in 1869. 1/3
She was sold to the #Tokugawa Shogunate in May 1865, but when she arrived in #Japan the #BoshinWar was already in full swing, in which the U.S. was a neutral party. The American ambassador refused to turn the ship over to the Shōgun's forces until the end of the war. 2/4
