Aerial view: Old John Tower in Bradgate Park just north of Leicester. Built in 1784 by George Grey, 5th Earl of Stamford as part of a deliberately 'ruined' folly. Sometime called the 'beer tankard tower' due to its shape #Leicester #BradgatePark #Folly #aerial #image

Had a wonderful day yesterday, leading friends on a walk around #BradgatePark
Good weather and the deer happy to pose.
Today I will mostly be walking around #BradgatePark
One of my fave places to visit, yearly.
Aerial image: Bradgate Park overlooking Leicester with the famous Old John Tower & war memorial crowning the hill. Criss-crossed with footpaths & bracken, the landscape reveals centuries of footsteps & fascination #BradgatePark #Leicester #OldJohnTower #aerial #image #EnglandFromAbove

Old John was killed by a falling flagpole parked in the middle of a bonfire. This was built to his memory. #OldJohn #BradgatePark #Leicester #FollyFellowship #Follies #Folly #follies.org.uk

This is one of the old #RedDeer which I managed to photograph during a visit to #BradgatePark near Leicester, UK. Old Red was just having a scout of the area prior to settling down for a late morning snooze in the bracken.

Multiple blotch mines of Ectoedemia occultella on Silver Birch [Betula pendula]. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
Blotch mines of Ectoedemia occultella, with a vacated gallery mine of Stigmella sakhalinella near the leaf tip showing dark arcs of frass with a margin. On Silver Birch [Betula pendula]. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A tenanted gallery mine of Stigmella luteella on Silver Birch [Betula pendula], showing frass-free scalloping along the edge of the gallery. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A single Ectoedemia occultella blotch mine, with a tentiform mine of Phyllonorycter ulmifoliella on the left hand side causing the leaf edge to fold over. On Silver Birch [Betula pendula]. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A few more leafmines from #bradgatepark yesterday, these all on Silver Birch [Betula pendula]: multiple blotch mines of Ectoedemia occultella, gallery mines of Stigmella sakhalinella (vacated) and Stigmella luteella (tenanted), and a Phyllonorycter ulmifoliella mine. #vc55moths #teammoth #ukwildlife
A Rowan [Sorbus aucuparia] leaflet with a vacated gallery mine of Stigmella nylandriella. The frass can be variable in this species, but the frass in arcs as shown here precludes Stigmella magdalenae. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A Rowan [Sorbus aucuparia] leaflet with a vacated gallery mine of Stigmella nylandriella on the left hand side, and a Phyllonorycter mine on the right hand side that appears to P. sorbi. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A Rowan [Sorbus aucuparia] leaflet with two mines of what appears to be Phyllonorycter sorbi. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A couple of species on Rowan [Sorbus aucuparia]: vacated gallery mines of Stigmella nylandriella with frass in arcs, and what I believe are mines of Phyllonorycter sorbi. I'm not certain on these but should be able to check the pupa to confirm. #vc55moths #teammoth #bradgatepark #ukwildlife
A tenanted blotch mine of Tischeria ekebladella on the lower right leaf lobe (with a Phyllonorycter sp. mine on the upper left lobe). Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
The external grazing and frass-covered silken larval tube of the Tortrix moth Gypsonoma dealbana. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A couple of moths on oak (Quercus sp.): a blotch leafmine of Tischeria ekebladella (with a Phyllonorycter sp. mine on the same leaf), and the external grazing and larval tube of the Tortrix Gypsonoma dealbana which uses a variety of deciduous trees. #vc55moths #teammoth #bradgatepark #ukwildlife
A vacated gallery mine of Stigmella samiatella on Sweet Chestnut [Castanea sativa]. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A tentiform mine of what I believe is Phyllonorycter messaniella on Sweet Chestnut [Castanea sativa]. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
Whilst mooching around Bradgate Park today, I collected a variety of leafmines. These are on Sweet Chestnut [Castanea sativa]: a vacated gallery mine of Stigmella samiatella and a tentiform mine of what I believe is Phyllonorycter messaniella. #vc55moths #teammoth #bradgatepark #ukwildlife
Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), Bradgate Park Leics. 22/10/2024.
Magpie Inkcap (Coprinopsis picacea), mature on left and emergent on right. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
Believe this is Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare). Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A puffball fungi. Bradgate Park, Leics. 22/10/2024.
A few phone-snapped fungi from Bradgate Park, Leics. today. I'm certain about Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) and Magpie Inkcap (Coprinopsis picacea), less so about Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) and no idea on the puffball which is probably gone over. #bradgatepark #fungi #ukwildlife
The big stag Red Deer I posted separately was keeping a group of four younger males in check. They were clearly intimidated and kept a distance from the big stag, whilst occasionally breaking out into bouts of 'pseudo rutting'. #bradgatepark

Bradgate Park is a renowned public deer park in the Charnwood area of Leics. with lots of history and generally lots of visitors. We spent some time there today on Grandparent duty, but I had my camera which was ideal for this big Red Deer stag. The deer are managed but roam freely. #bradgatepark
