A plum curculio Weevil climbing up the edge of a dead leaf. Plum curculio larvae are typically 6 to 9 mm long when fully grown, when they reach the pupal stage measuring about 5 to 7 mm; all adult characteristics are visible in this stage prior to transformation. Adult plum curculio are about 4 to 6 mm long and have a small, rough snout colored with black, gray, and brown specks. Four pairs of ridges cover the wings; however, because of the middle humps they appear to have only two ridges.

A closeup profile of Aphrophora alni The adults of these large 'froghoppers' reach 9–10 millimetres (0.35–0.39 in) of length, the females are usually slightly larger than the males. The basic coloration of the body is usually brown. Their front wings wear two distinct clear patches on the margins. Head and pronotum have a median keel. The head has a pair of compound eyes and two simple eyes (ocelli). The legs are strongly developed and fit to jump. Tibiae of the rear pair of legs carry several spines.

The wingspan is folded back. The forewings are dark brown, ocherous along the inner margin, where it is suffused with roseate. At the base of the wing is a white spot containing a dark brown dot, and near the base an oblique white band. About the middle of the wing is a large white spot or indistinct broad band, irrorated (speckled) with dark brownish and tinted with roseate on the inner margin. Near the tip is a costal white spot and a roseate spot opposite on the inner margin, and a whitish spot at the tip. The hindwings are dark fuscous-gray, cilia fuscous. The moth is against a solid light pink background.
