Who is spending the most and least in tech? Investing.com -- Tech stocks paused last week as investors reassessed spending patterns across the sector, with UBS highlighting both the biggest and smallest spenders on capital expenditure (capex) and research and development (R&D). In its latest Intelligence Weekly, UBS said, “With mixed results from the tech supply chain this week, we have started to witness some early signs of rotation within tech favoring AI laggards.” The bank added that the review of spending intensity, defined as capex relative to sales plus R&D relative to sales, offers a crucial pulse check for investors. UBS revealed that the top three spenders are Meta (NASDAQ:META), Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), with the bottom three being MasterCard, Uber (NYSE:UBER) and Accenture (NYSE:ACN). Meta and Intel have a combined 2025 capex and R&D intensity of 63%, while Oracle’s score is 50%. Meanwhile, Mastercard’s intensity is 6%, with Uber also at 6% and Accenture coming in bottom at 3%. Other names in the list included: Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) (36%), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) (31%), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) (11%) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (35%). UBS noted that “while strong spending amid structural growth opportunities usually highlights solid visibility, a spending pulse check should still help investors assess risks and opportunities.” The analysts said that during the ongoing AI rally, markets have generally rewarded companies with strong investment plans as “a precursor to future monetization.” The report ranked 36 companies within UBS’s AI portfolio by combined 2025 spending intensity. UBS said the exercise is particularly timely given the seasonal weakness tech stocks often experience in August and September. 3rd party Ad. Not an offer or recommendation by Investing.com. See disclosure here or remove ads. “With tech historically experiencing weak seasonality during the August and September months, we believe it is a good time to take a pulse check on tech’s spending trends,” the note said. Despite near-term caution, UBS is maintaining its broader strategy. “With a balanced positioning and AI laggards continuing to outperform broader tech indexes, we stick with our strategy and recommend diversified opportunities across semiconductors, software and internet within our AI portfolio,” the analysts wrote. American Electric Power Exceeds Earnings Expectations Amid Trade Tariffs American Electric Power (AEP), a major U.S. utility provider, exceeded earnings expectations for the first quarter, with minimal anticipated impact from recent trade tariffs on its substantial investment strategy. The company maintains a $54 billion capital expenditure plan spanning the next five years, designed to accommodate escalating power requirements fueled by factors like the proliferation of hyperscale data centers, the return of manufacturing operations to U.S. soil, and significant economic expansion across the country. AEP, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, manages 11 regulated utilities throughout the Midwest. The company anticipates the potential for additional investments, up to $10 billion, within the five-year timeframe, although tariffs are not expected to significantly alter the overall plan. Reported earnings are projected between $5.75 and $5.95 per share, with a projected annual growth rate of 6% to 8%. President and CEO Fehrman, assuming the role in August 2024, has reiterated the company’s annual operating earnings forecasts. AEP has proactively filed integrated resource plans with regulatory bodies in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia, and West Virginia. The company recently established connections for hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) data centers belonging to Amazon and Google in Indiana, representing a multi-billion dollar investment. Currently, AEP is experiencing substantial demand, with over 500 customers, both existing and prospective, seeking to connect approximately 80 gigawatts of power to its transmission network. A recent analysis by S&P Global Market Intelligence indicates that U.S. data centers will consume over 280 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually in 2024, with projections reaching nearly 530 TWh by 2028. The Department of Energy’s assessment aligns with this trend, estimating data center energy consumption to be between 325 TWh and 580 TWh by 2028.
