#Coyotebrush seedling growth is poor in the shade. #Coastliveoak, #Californiabay, #Rhusintegrifolia, & other shade producing species replace coastal #sagescrub and other coyote bush-dominated areas, particularly when there hasn't been a wildfire or heavy grazing.

#Deer #herbivory gave the #foliage of these #Quercus #agrifolia characteristic narrow-waisted/#hourglass shape. They have managed to grow big enough to keep most of their leaves. #coastliveoak #oak Pics by @alicegcummings
