PAN AND DAPHNIS, C1-C2 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI This statue group was pieced together with many broken or missing sections replaced, but is essentially from the C1. It depicts the goatish god Pan teaching the beautiful Sicilian shepherd Daphnis how to play the syrinx or pan pipes. There is no particular author who tells how this turns into a seduction (or, more likely, a rape), but Pan being Pan, it's not hard to understand how this scene turned into an artistic trope. In reality, shepherds see everything going on in their flocks, and are not naive, but here Daphnis is innocently delighted to be taught by the very inventor of the instrument he's learning. Both figures are sitting together on a rock, and Pan's knee is raised to conceal his sexual excitement. The viewer knows what Daphnis does not: the shepherd will soon be learning quite a different lesson from the literally horny god.
