One of the great things about #microscopy is the variety of other micro-critters you encounter on your slides, which often are just as important in your #geoarchaeological story. One few favourite are #dinoflagellate cysts which are marine #microfossils most often associated with bedrock deposits

Painting of three dinoflagellates in mainly blue on a dark background. Dinoflagellates are microscopic organisms that have been around super long. They look like little gelatinous transparent blobs with tiny tails. The little organ system things are visible through their outer later and have very different amorphous shapes and patterns.
These look like they are swimming. With trails of very small groupings of circles around them.

Impaired photoacclimation in a kleptoplastidic dinoflagellate reveals physiological limits of early stages of endosymbiosis Dinophysis dinoflagellates use plastids stolen from prey. Garric et al. show that these plastids cannot synthesize a complete phycoerythrin, a crucial photosynthetic protein. Dinophysis thus relies on prey ingestion for photoacclimation. It is noteworthy that some Dinophysis have acquired phycoerythrin synthesis genes from cryptophytes during evolution.

Painting that depicts three dinoflagellates of various sizes. The canvas is square and left raw (unprimed) for the background. Dinoflagellates are tiny and very old microorganisms that live in marine habitats. Their exterior is translucent, so their little various organelle blobs are visible through their little globby bodies. (Artist is not a scientist and struggles with some aphasia).
These jiggly dinoflagellates are primarily yellow in places where they are colored. See, these wonderful creatures come with all sorts of designs and their innards are all different too! It’s wild. They look like something I dreamed up with all their circles and stripes and speckles.
One of them has a little organelle that looks all brainy textured. And that’s real!
The artist also chose to make groupings of organic ovals in the background space like they often do. It’s a part of their “style” or somesuch.
One of the organelles also looks like a little butt.
I don’t make the rules.
I just paint what I see.

My hands haven’t been able to draw the past couple of days (dystonia). There isn’t a new nudibranch for y’all; but I offer you this Dinoflagellate painting from some years ago.

I just love dinoflagellates.
