Image of bee. The World needs more people who thank the bees, apologise to the mushrooms when they step on them, and compliment moss for doing a good job. upthegardencompany.co.uk
Every buzz, every blossom, every harvest… we owe so much to them. So plant for them, protect them, and appreciate them.
Because when we care for bees, we care for the whole planet. 🌍🌼

You don’t need a forest to help wildlife.
One oak can support 557 species of caterpillars—food for countless birds.
Even a balcony plant helps.
Less light, more life.

🍂 Leave the leaves — and let nature rest! Those fallen leaves are more than garden mess — they’re a cozy blanket for insects, frogs & hedgehogs to shelter through winter. Skip the rake and let your garden care for its wild residents. 🦔💚

While we still have time this August, set aside a small garden patch for experimentation. This could be for new crops, unique varieties, or companion planting. You might discover a new favorite.

Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) with two Eastern Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens) feeding on a drooping umbel
Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) opening orange flowers in a low-growing bed of Wild Strawberries (Fragaria virginiana)
Red Milkweed Beetles mating on a budding milkweed inflorescence. Oleander Aphids (Aphis nerii) are clustered all over, beneath the umbel.
Little swing-top bottles of bright red milkweed shrub, with a Common Milkweed flower in a shot glad in the middle. There is a oval wooden bowl of drying rose petals as a backdrop, and the petals are notable a darker pink than the Milkweed flowers, but significantly less vibrant a color than the shrub
Our first episode, Milkweed, is live! We dive into milkweeds, their wildlife connections, Indigenous uses, foraging, recipes, and how to grow them. Listen now on Spotify, iHeart, Amazon & Apple Podcasts.

I’ve planted Nothing, and now Nothing is starting to grow. It seems our pioneer is a sowthistle, not unexpected.
No other growth in this experiment yet, other than a film of green algae over the soil.

If you are gardening in eastern North America, Red #Columbine is an excellent addition for shade and sun. Pollinators love it, and you can share seeds with friends!
Note: Seeds require cold stratification and light to germinate.

Lowbush Blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium)
Hillside Blueberries (Vaccinium pallidum)
Burning Bush, Euonymus alatus. Once a bunch of this moves in and it starts getting well-established, the blueberries and huckleberries die off
Likely another V. pallidum, possibly a Gaylucacia, with ferns, over partridgeberries
When you're ready to tell me which one is a blueberry or huckleberry, and which one is burning bush, you're ready to catch an infestation early. If not, make sure the Euonymus alatus has visible wings before declaring it invasive and pulling.

Female Banded-Demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) sitting on a Water Iris frond. It has a bright metallic green thorax and head with bulbous black eyes. It's wings are see through but the solid structures are metallic green. The male is bright metallic blue and has solid markings on it's wings.
Female White-legged Damselfly (Platycnemis pennipes)... this is a new species to our garden. As the name suggests it's legs are predominantly white (with black stripes running along their length) it's body is off white with black markings along it's length. The male has a pale blue tail, it's body is also pale blue, it often has a greenish tint.)
Managed to photograph two Damselflies in our garden today that I've not photographed before and one is a new species to our garden (or I've not noticed it before)... both females. Details in Alt Text

A small bumblebee on an even smaller flower (around 5mm across) and open flower is in the top right of the image.. The bumblebee is bright yellow and black, it is very fluffy ! It's called the Early Bumblebee as it is one of the first to emerge after Winter.
Last one from me today... taken less than an hour ago and the first time I've managed to photograph one 🙂
