Not sure what I was thinking when I said I’d talk to the minister about Joey’s funeral. Herm was the churchy one, not me. At least it wasn’t a dark, Gothic building, with grey stone and stained glass blocking all view of the outside world, where you felt like you’d already been buried alive. Instead, being in the sanctuary of First Church of the Kindred was like being inside a marshmallow. I imagined a watchful crew of Holy Painters running around, armed with brushes and paint rollers like Crusaders’ swords to maintain the clean, white surfaces. As a kid, I’d never liked being in church. If tourists weren’t handy, churches made it easy for us to part folks from their money. I briefly worried about this when I was around six, expecting a lightning bolt to strike me. It never did. Now I was in a church after beheading a vampire.
