I wish my high school classes used such engaging #GamesForLearning assignments as Student-Designed Histories developed by @gamingthepast.bsky.social: interactive fiction based on carefully considered research of people from the past and the decisions (and consequences) they faced.

Why do I need so many games about one historical subject? #Wargames and #Boardgames on the same battle can offer different perspectives in how they model historical elements, varying our experiences and, with some reflection, making such games ideal as #GamesForLearning.
If you work with #GamesForLearning -- especially games about history -- @gamingthepast.bsky.social has done some amazing work to inform and inspire. And he offers his resources free online. Whether your're a dabbler or expert, it's a treasure trove of material.
Matrix Games are good for exploring a situation: historical, near future, or currently unfolding. This one "rapidly produced" fits the moment and might help people better understand the many moving parts in this evolving situation.

I take a look at Peter Dennis’ line of print-and-craft paper toy soldiers. They’ve served me well over the years with their various historical periods and versatility. This holiday season I’m reminded of the joyful playfulness they inspire.

After a busy weekend presenting my Battle of Great Bridge #wargame at the 250th re-enactment I revisited my thoughts about good beginner games for those seeking to explore the confluence of history, games, and learning...battlegames.

Photo of the Battle of Great Bridge terrain board set up at the 250th commemoration of the battle. Alas, I have no action shots of me running games, as I was extremely busy the whole time and entirely on my own. Picture of a terrain diorama with stands of small paper miniature soldiers marching across it. String marks off square spaces. Boxes with dice and a few signs sit at both ends of the table.
The paper British forces march over the model bridge and across the island, hoping to dislodge paltry rebel militia. String divides the board into square spaces for the game.
Paper stands of Virginia militia await the advancing British behind stout breastworks. String divides the board into square spaces for the game.
Set up my Battle of Great Bridge wargame demo at the 250th commemoration event hosted by the City of Chesapeake, VA, Dec. 6-7. Ran many games, met some wonderful people, used the board to outline the battle, and discussed exploring history through games.

View out a front porch along a snow-covered walk, with snowy pines on the left and snow-covered tress on the right, and a snow-covered gravel driveway in the distance: probably about an inch of dusty light snow overall.
Ranks of 15mm scale paper miniatures by Peter Dennis mounted on magnetic bases in a plastic scrapbooking box (with metal strapping glued in to hold the magnetic bases), including three columns of British Redcoats/Grenadiers, some artillery, and a mass of Culpeper Minutemen.
Papercraft 15mm #miniature #wargaming soldiers ready to march off to the 250th Battle of Great Bridge event tomorrow...but snow will delay our departure by a few hours when the roads will hopefully clear up.

Shot of a folding table with a miniature wargaming diorama set up. Sting along brads in the wooden frame create a grid of squares for playing a game. Stands of paper soldiers occupy key locations, crossing a bridge and assembled behind barricades. Table draped with blue cloth, with two folding stands with signs about the battle and game.

Braving the snow tomorrow to travel to attend the 250th commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge Dec. 6-7 in Chesapeake, VA, where I’ll run history wargame demonstrations all weekend. If you’re in the area please stop by, say hello, and join a quick game.

Hex-covered game board showing the British countryside with several Me109 and Spitfire airplane tokens arrayed upon it, facing each other and closing fast.
A white and gray mottled longhair cat peers out upon a gameboard with small pieces from its vantage point near the napkins and salt-and-pepper shakers on a dining room table.
Got the Fighters of Europe #wargame to the table tonight. My Luftwaffe Me109s wiped out the RAF Spitfires with only one loss, but it was a good learning game with my son. He’s now interested in playing more scenarios. Of course Hera the cat wanted to play...with all the pieces.

Inspired by an old Osprey Illustrated Military Diary, I consider the possibility of running a historical #wargame each week, coinciding with a notable event one could explore through simulation...including event and game suggestions.

Spent Saturday running my Battle of Great Bridge #wargame demo on the site where the Culpeper Minutemen mustered 250 years ago. Despite using my very basic game system for this event, I still considered numerous other rules one might use to replay the battle.

Close-up of the wargame table, showing string grid squares and paper ranks of British soldiers, grenadiers in front, marching down a road and across a wooden bridge. Flocked foam terrain rises out of a glistening model swamp.
Finished Great Bridge #wargame board deployed...at the location where, 250 years ago, the Culpeper Minutemen mustered before setting off for Williamsburg and ultimately their crucial role at the Battle of Great Bridge. Spent the day talking about and gaming the battle.

Top-down view into a miniature wargaming diorama in progress. Wooden bridge and breastworks in place over river and at end of causeway respectively. Patriot militia lurk behind the breastworks; British troops march across the bridge and narrow causeway.

WIP on my Battle of Great Bridge #wargame board. A few touch-ups and spray matte on the flocking and I’m ready to string up the grid. Photos of breastworks and bridge in place with Peter’s Paperboys British and Patriot militia.

Top-down view into a miniature wargaming diorama in progress. The marshy surfaces have a gloss to indicate water. with clumps of doormat reeds, while the land surfaces have a layer of greenish flock and some sand on them, with a brownish road running through it all, along a causeway, and across the place where the bridge belongs.
Flock this! WIP on my Battle of Great Bridge #wargame board. River/marsh glossed. Grass and sand flock on land drying. Big mess, but hoping it all works well with breastworks and (adequate) bridge.
