Taking a walk around the Necropolis, a nursery rhyme reminder came into view.

Love this beautiful little Art Nouveau style bronze angel on the Walter MacFarlane Memorial in the Nercopolis in Glasgow. It was created by the Australian artist Bertram MacKennal in 1896.

Built for Archibald Douglas Monteath, it's unusual in having no dedication or inscription of any kind on it.

The Monteath Mausoleum in the Necropolis in Glasgow. Dating from the mid-1800s, it was designed by David Cousin and was based on the Knights Templar Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

MacKenzie, a cabinetmaker and upholsterer, was a founding partner in the Sun Foundry and was its primary financier when it was created by George Smith in 1858, which may explain why he was given quite such an ornate cast iron memorial.

The recently restored Alexander MacKenzie memorial in the Glasgow Necropolis. Unlike almost all the other memorials in this Victorian cemetery, the MacKenzie memorial is made from cast iron.

TW: Maternal death, Neonatal death. This memorial from Glasgow Necropolis stops you in your tracks. A tragedy in eleven days, and proof, if proof were ever needed, that no, things weren’t better in ‘the good old days’, particularly if you were a woman.

This was my monument of the day. To John Henry Alexander, actor and theatre owner. Designed by James Hamilton and brought to life by Alexander Handyside Ritchie in remarkable condition for such an ornate structure, and many of his family are commemorated on the back.

The Necropolis covers 35 acres around a small but quite steep hill. Over 50,000 burials occurred there and over 3,500 memorials and tombs remain, many quite spectacular. These reflect the wealth and power of the city at its height.

Adjacent to Glasgow Cathedral, over the Bridge of Sighs, you’ll find Glasgow Necropolis.

The Glasgow Necropolis: Many of the architects and sculptors who created the beautiful buildings for the city of the living also created monuments for the city of the dead.

Built in the 1830s, for many Glaswegians it marked the final journey from the city of the living across Bridge of Sighs over the Moledinar Ravine to the city of the dead.

Throwback post. It's a bit wet to go out, so here's a day out to a less aquatic Glasgow.

An early morning view from the Necropolis across to the buildings of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. While the Necropolis first opened in 1833, the hospital has been based on this site since the 1790s.

Opened in the 1840s, it marked a shift in burial practices in the growing city from people being interred in small burial grounds surrounding local churches to the use of large centralised cemeteries.

In total, there are about 3,500 grave markers in the Necropolis, but around 50,000 people were buried here, so the majority lie in unmarked common graves like this one.

When visiting the Necropolis, it's easy to focus on the ornate monuments created for the upper echelons of Glasgow society set on the top of the hill and forget that this was a burial place for all.
