Record has recently been confirmed here. They have mainly been seen near Sheffield, about 30 years ago.

My new insect guidebook came in handy today. I *think* this is an ichneumon wasp, on my bathroom window. Maybe from subfamily Ophininae?
The guidebook compares IDing an ichneumon wasp to IDing warblers, so I don't feel so bad about my uncertainty! 😄

I didn't have time to grab my DSLR, so I used my phone to take a quick picture of an I. stramentor that was in the garden earlier. It lays its eggs in the caterpillars of #moths, specifically Setaceous Hebrew Characters and Large Yellow Underwings. My year's first #ichneumon wasp.

A closer view of the same wasp described in first alt text. it has very long legs, especially the rear ones, all with a 90 degree bend in the middle. Legs are dark red-gold, body dark with some lighter bits, faint strips at rear. Wings are semi-translucent like msoked glass with some cross-wise thin veins, and looking a bit tattered at the ends. It has very long antennae. Sitting on the small flower buds that are like tiny green grapes.
Same wasp see previous descriptions-- here we see it face on, front part is not sharply focussed, but the wings are and they are interesting: smoky translucent, divided into sections by fine veins, looking like stained glass, and a bit tattered on the tips. Surrounded by the tiny flower buds, some small leaflets and large blurred green zones that are parts of larger leaves.
These were decidely not great photos, but still always fun to see these exotic #wasps #Ichneumon or similar- I see lots of different kinds. Look at those wings! The Aralia is attracting lots of critters- today I got a short vid-hopefully more posts to come, though always far behind on editing..lol
