A very poor photo form our garden on 5th October, but this is verified as Crytea erythraea, 5th #irecord record. This parasitoid lays eggs on or in Plumed Fan-foot moth, Pechipogo plumigeralis.

Very preliminary but below should be a #newspecies and the first record of the #ichneumonid genus Patroclus in the US! This newly collected singleton specimen is from central Utah but Patroclus is neotropical, getting as far north as Mexico.

A red sketch on a whiteboard of a female long-tailed giant ichneumonid wasp, or megarhyssa macrurus. They're very long, and females have an equally long 'tail' that's actually an ovipositor. They're harmless to humans, but parasitize pigeon horntails in trees.

A very large, long-legged, thread-waisted ichneumonid wasp is perched on the underside of a leaf. It is predominantly black in colour, but has long red antennae, red and black banded hind legs, a narrow red "waist", and long, heavily veined translucent brown wings folded over over its back. At the tip of her abdomen is a short, sharply pointed ovipositor.

Here's yet another #garden goody. A big #ichneumonid #wasp: Therion sp. -- probably T. circumflexum (female) -- ~ 30 mm long. These impressive fliers are parasitoids of lepidopteran larvae. #backyard #biodiversity #native #YorkRegion #Ontario πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Ichneumonid wasp
(Trogus pennator)

Creeping thru dill fronds after black swallowtail caterpillar hosts, first found this type of parasitic wasp enclosed with our β€œsafe” chrysalids, unaware it’d eclosed, call was coming from inside the house. Late July.

A very fancy looking wasp, nothing like yellowjackets etc its body is very thin and long mostly iridescent black with translucent coppery wings folded back over its body. I haven't researched their morphology but I think it is the rear part of the body- abodomen- that is greatly elongated, at the point where it extends from the front of body, thorax, it is super narrow, hardly thicker than the oversize rear pair of legs, then it widens out to 2/3 roughly the width of the main body, this extension is as long as or longer than the rest of the insect including the wings. Then from the end of that extension, a very long black egg laying organ extends, hair thin with a slightly wider white tip- this thing is as long as the whole wasp including the long abdomen extension! It has a few white markings such as at leg joints, most visible on those extra long muscular rear legs which are much larger than the front pairs.
This wasp is sitting on a yarrow flower head, a flat cluster composed of many many tiny flower heads each in turn composed of tiny central disk flowers surrounded by a few petal like ray flowers. Overall they are a dull pink, but when you look closely some bits are quite strong pink, some grey-white. Background is blurred green foliage.

Thanks to my students during the first-years Fauna course I could witness this giant #ichneumonid wasp Megarhyssa rixator in action, parasitizing the larva of a giant woodwasp inside the wood with her mega long and flexible ovipositor. #biodiversity of NL @w-u-r.bsky.social
