This painting had me laughing! Look at the state of those cherubs! They have the thighs of a rugby player and a tiny face at an odd angle.

The standing cherub on the right looks like he's had nits so his mum has shaved his head. The seated cherub on the left has clearly not been a classmate so sports a head of hair a 20 year old would be proud of. Despite their sturdy build they seem to be buckling under the weight of a fancy gold-bordered black tablet (not the tech variety).

Taken in the long gallery at Kiplin Hall in Yorkshire. For once, no light flare!

Photograph taken of a huge oil painting on the wall in the amazing library at Kiplin Hall, Yorkshire. It's likely to be by the C17/C18 artist Nicolas de Largillière.

The Painting:

The painting shows a beautiful woman dressed in a luxurious silver robe, with glimpses of a rich green dress with gold detail and a low neckline underneath. She has decadent red pointed slippers on and five blooms in her silver-blonde hair which is pinned up on top of her head exquisitely. She is leaning on a red velvet cushion atop a wooden balcony with railings looking down wistfully at whatever is happening below. At her feet, partially hidden by her robe, is a small brown and white dog with curly fur. Behind her in the darkness is a gentleman in the shadows with a pointed nose watching the lady intensely. He is a little unnerving. Could he be her patron perhaps? Her leaning on the balcony suggests despite her wealthy appearance, she is trapped between the railings preventing her fall and the figure behind.

#Background

The photograph shows two types of 'background'. The first, the interior decor of beautiful built-in, wraparound bookshelves and panelling with a deep green colour and sizeable cornice. The second, the shadowy figure behind the lady in the painting and the dog at her feet behind the balcony rails.

#LightFlare

Another of my best efforts to capture an historical painting but being tiny, even withy phone camera held above my head and on tiptoes, there's always a shaft of light that hits!

Kiplin Hall:

Kiplin Hall has a tremendous variety of artworks, including one of my heroes of the art world, Angelica Kauffman. She was one of two female artists who were founding members of The Royal Academy of Art in London, in 1768. Her contemporary was Mary Moser.

I'll stop now before I get on my soapbox about why she deserves a bigger place in history!

Meet Cedric. Can't remember what it was actually called but it had a very distinguished name! Stumbled across this scaly beast sitting on top of a cupboard at the end of the long gallery next to the doorway out at Kiplin Hall.

Photograph shows a stuffed crocodile sitting above a cabinet with the edge of a cream decorative door frame to the left. The crocodile's mouth is a tiny bit open to show off its sharp teeth. Its beady eye follows the viewer. Its back foot is slightly raised as if it's about to start walking.

Photograph taken of a 1940s green-grey loo roll holder against a well worn wall, with a roll of Izal medicated loo roll in place.

Two of the rooms at Kiplin Hall were kept in the state they were in, when the beautiful property was requisitioned for military rehab for soldiers in the 1940s.

Remember this pointless excuse for loo roll from primary school days! Dreadful stuff 😂

Took this at the beautiful Kiplin Hall in Yorkshire, which is a treasure trove of travel souvenirs (of the posh kind) and random inherited items, amongst a vast array of antiques and artworks. This definitely fits the theme of 'unexpected encounters'!

Image shows a sizeable block of old, dark wood atop a cream crocheted lace mat. It looks historic and was on a table at the side of a room. On the table in front of the block is a small notice in calligraphy that reads;

'Family tradition asserts that this piece of wood is part of the BLOCK on which Charles I was beheaded and given to the Duchess of Cleveland, Lady Baltimore's grandmother, by Charles the Second.'

So who knows if it's true! Either way, it was fascinating to see.

Photograph taken using a macro setting looking up at some pale pink blossom on a huge, dark stemmed tree with blue sky beyond. Stamens are delicate white, tipped with gold and the buds behind the cluster of four open flowers are a deep pink.

Taken in the car park at the end of an amazing visit to the C17 wonder of Kiplin Hall, near Richmond in North Yorkshire.
