background with the Duke's own #ChâteauDÉtampes. The falconer leads, with a long staff for rousing game from trees and bushes, two birds on his fist, and at his belt a lure, whose meat garnish would bring the falcons or hawks back.

The mistaken attribution to Durer of an illustration showing the burning of Jan Hus on this web page https://www.byteseu.com/1168650/
brought me to this fascinating discussion of the illustrations of the Jena Codex […]
Detail of the Matthew portrait with winged man symbol over his shoulder and Matthew looking annoyed, holding his knife near his face.
Detail of the Mark portrait with lion symbol, mouth open, flying in from upper right as Mark works on his manuscript with knife and pen.
Detail of Luke portrait with his symbol at upper right as Luke looks the other way and dips his pen in an inkhorn.
Detail of John portrait with the eagle looking him in the eye as John holds pen and knife over an open quire. John has green hair and a pretty tunic in light green with orange crosses and orange lining.
Evangelist portraits with unusually talkative symbols, and concomitantly grumpy Evangelists. Leave me alone, I'm trying to write here!

Photo showing a watercolor painting of two decorative acanthus leaves, copied from the Göttingen Model Book, which is a medieval (15th century) manuscript meant to teach illuminators how to decorate books. The ones I've painted are long leaves with "lobes" all along their length; each leaf twists and turns around a central staff or post. They are subtly shaded, with one color on one side of each leaf, and another contrasting color on the other side (which is visible as the leaf twists and turns over). The left side leaf is a soft gray-blue on one side, and a metallic gold underside. The right side leaf is a soft mauve-purple, with a bright green underside, but it's not finished quite yet. Down the center of each leaf is a central vein, marked out with a series of tiny white dots. And since the artwork is still on my desk, there is a paintbrush in the photo, and a little dish containing green paint. This style of decoration was used in the Gutenberg Bibles, some of the first printed books in Europe. Though the type on the bibles was printed, the margins were still decorated by hand with painted designs like this. So texts like the Göttingen Model Book were instrumental in spreading this particular style of illumination in Germany in the 15th century. I like to just use these leaves to practice my brush work. It's relaxing, with no goal in mind except working with the materials.
Working on some examples of acanthus leaves for my upcoming manuscript illumination class at the Phipps Conservatory this summer. My colors are pretty muted by comparison to the original MS. #medievalsky #medieval #manuscriptillumination

Full-page miniature in striking reds, blues, greens, and gold of the apotheosis of St. Amand.
Let's finish with something shiny. Valenciennes 500, ca. 1160-1170, has a full-page miniature of St. Adelgund's vision of St. Amand on fol. 68r. #manuscriptillumination
Illustration in a medieval manuscript initial showing a haloed figure unconscious on the ground, a very irritated gray horse with green saddle, and God (Jesus?) looking out of the sky.
Today we celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul, olim Saul. First #manuscript : Getty Museum, Ms. Ludwig IX 2, fol. 318v. This early-14th-c. breviary has the scene on the road to Damascus in an initial H. That horse looks REALLY annoyed. 🧵

The Flateyjarbók is a great "little" manuscript containing lots of interesting stories that we have covered or will cover on Saga Thing. Here's a fun initial showing what my dogs like to do whenever John and I start recording.
