But there is growing concern about its history of alleged pollution. July 10, 2025 Emma McIntosh - Investigative Reporter, Sheila Wang - Investigative Reporter Tainted water has been trickling out of the Buckhorn Mountain mine since 2008. As a subsidiary of Toronto-based company Kin- ross Gold tunnelled into the rock in northern Washington, it extracted more than a billion dol- lars' worth of gold.

The company is seeking two key provincial permits that would allow it to dig for ore sam- ples and pour treated wastewater into the river system the community relies on for fish. An expert who reviewed the Kinross plan on behalf of Grassy Narrows raised concerns that the company's proposed water treatment plan wouldn't address sulphate, which could worsen the effects of old mercury still lingering in the waterways, left there by another industrial polluter 70 years ago. From 1962 to 1970, a pulp and paper mill about 100 kilometres upstream from Grassy Narrows dumped tonnes of mercury into the Wabigoon River. The potent neurotoxin contaminated the river's fish and poisoned the people who ate them. Residents of the community have long reported tremors, slurred speech, impaired hearing, tunnel vision and lost muscle co-ordination.
