The print is side-lit, so you can just make out how the black impression has been pressed into the paper leaving an embossed effect.

A full-colour test print. The black keyblock outline now has a dark grey background. The lady's kimono is bright red, with a white geometric pattern and a blue collar and hem. The lantern has a red glow.

And the first test print doesn't look too bad (though I really like the black keyblock on its own, TBH).

I recently took a couple of test impressions from my Cyborg Ninja block. Some of the lines can be cleaned up a little bit, but overall, I'm fairly happy with how it's looking. Now on to the color blocks... #printmaking #mokuhanga #metalgearsolid

The wood block for the background. The body and face of the woman and the glowing part of the lantern have been cleared. The background will still be printed underneath the woman's hair, which is black anyway. The block hasn't been test printed yet, so still has the thin paper template glued to it.

The wood block for the yellow colour. Although the colour will only really be visible on collar and pattern of the kimono, it extends underneath the full kimono for simplicity.

The wood block for the red colour. This is very similar to the yellow block but has the kimono pattern carved away, which will reveal the yellow underneath.

And that's the colour blocks now carved. One each for the background, the red kimono and glow in the lantern, and the yellow kimono collar and pattern and the lantern.

I've been slowly carving this block for the past few months. I'm fairly happy with how the carving turned out, but we'll see how it prints. The original art is by Yoji Shinkawa, and I'm trying to recreate it as a woodblock print. #mokuhanga #printmaking #metalgearsolid

HAAR by Paul Furneaux. Four long narrow pieces covered with coloured mokuhanga paper, the pieces are shaped like long piano keys and the colours are different from each aspect they are viewed from.

Indigo-Blue by Paul Furneaux. A framed piece, mustard, pink, indigo, black, pale blue colours of stripes, solid blocks of colour, and cloud and plant shapes.

Fuji-San by Paul Furneaux. A framed piece, Mount Fuji with a silvery moon above its snow clad peak.

Tokyo: Days, by Paul Furneaux. Two panels with off white, brown, orange and black colours, the orange/brown bleeds into the off white.

A treat to see 'North by East', an exhibition of work by Paul Furneaux at Drum Castle, and a lovely chat with the curator, Dorothy Williams. On until 2nd Nov, free to visit. Mr Furneaux is also doing a demo/talk about his work on Sat 18th Oct. Info below...
