Thought to be part of a series of the four season, this mosaic depicts a figure with wings wearing a wreath of grapes and holding more grapes in a hold of their gown. The mosaic is a square panel with a wavy border in undulating reds and grays.

✨Belated #MosaicMonday with a mosaic thought to personify Autumn✨

We must confess to enjoying the long weekend and entirely missing Monday, but we’re back now! In our corner of the globe, autumn is upon us - though it might very well be the warmest autumn in quite some time.

The Dolphin Mosaic, Fishbourne, with the Mosaic Maker’s Mark, a black bird, at the top

SO, s’funny thing you should mention that!
Was about to follow up my original post with one of the Mosaic Maker’s Mark. I remember taking a closer photo. Could I find it on the phone or camera?
So here’s the best view of the Little Black Bird (top) from the other photos I took.

MOSAIC WITH A LION ATTACKING A BULL, C. 20 BCE (?). VATICAN MUSEUMS

This beautiful little emblema was found in Hadrian's Villa in 1779, but the VM catalogue dates it to the early reign of Augustus, well before the existence of the Villa. This is not necessarily a mistake: emblemata were valuable artworks and could be collected. If this is early Augustan, it was almost certainly a Greek import, as Roman mosaicists were not yet capable of such refined work. We see here a desert landscape with rocky outcrops at left and centre. A few shrubs provide a bit of greenery. The space is divided horizontally by a river, on the far side of which a bull looks at the main action, safe from attack. At centre foreground, a lion has pounced on another bull, which is looking across at the bull on the other side. The lion is sinking its teeth into the bull's left haunch. The bull is staggering, its front legs folding. It's a goner. This is a lesson about the savagery of nature.

My photo shows a Roman ‘Marine Life’ mosaic from the impluvium (pool for catching rainwater) at the House of the Geometric Mosaics in Pompeii. The mosaic depicts an octopus with its tentacles wrapped around a lobster, surrounded by many different kinds of Mediterranean fish. The octopus is depicted in pale cream and beige tesserae, the lobster in shades of orange, the surrouding fish in a palette of neutral browns, greys, and creams, all set against a black tesserae background

A spectacular googly-eyed octopus does battle with a lobster in this 2,000 year-old Roman mosaic from Pompeii 🐙 🦞

Some fantastic fishy onlookers too!

A roman mosaic in mostly shades of brown featuring 9 panels and a border of stylised waves. Four of the images are head and shoulders shoulder portraits of women who I understand are personifications of the seasons. Each corner panel includes a bird and a stylised image of what I thought might be a jellyfish or medusa but could be something else entirely. The central panel is two men but I’m not certain what they are doing and I can’t find a description.

A corner of a Roman mosaic. On the right is a large vine with huge bunches of grapes and a bird perched on one of the branches. A man is moving past the vine towards the left, with his right arm extended in the direction of a large hare which is crouched down, nibbling a shrub. In the foreground and on the left are parts of a delicate scroll border.

A Roman mosaic, executed in a naïve style. Beneath is either a rabbit or a hare. above is what may be intended to be a dog but the frankly shocking quality of the mosaic means it could be mistaken for an aardvark or anteater.

For #MosaicMonday here’s a section of the #MadabaMap #Jordan

The Madaba Map is part of a floor mosaic in the church of Saint George in Madaba, Jordan.

It contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. The map dates to the sixth century AD.
