The Harrington mudflat (here on Saint Simons Island) is adorned with six Spoonies on a dreary day from last autumn. The Spoonies’ buddy, Wilson the Wood Stork finds his way into the photo. The Spoonbill reflections struggle to add a little more pink to the scene.

The exposed mudflats of Nightcliff Bay on a receding tide. The scattered pioneering mangroves are fully exposed, their breathing root systems like shadows beneath them. Long skeins of very shallow water are still slowly receding with the tide, creating alternating pools and peninsulas across the bay. A dense flock of wading birds is just visible, mid-image on the left, feeding in one of the transient pools.

A wide expanse of wet sandy mud fills the foreground. Far off in the distance are the tiny figures of a woman and two dogs, walking along the edge of the flat where the sand meets the shallow, incoming tide, almost identical in colour to the flat. Further away still is the relatively low dirt bank of the bay's edge, topped with a dense screen of trees and shrubs.
