The ʻōhiʻa lehua tree grows from the sea level to about 8,000 feet in altitude, and can be shrubby or stately. Seeds are tiny & easily carried on the wind. It can sprout from a rock crack & is one of the first plants to colonize new lava flows. Other plants begin to grow in its shade.
