November is #PainAwarenessMonth. Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 Canadians and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. We asked IALH research fellows and student affiliates to share how their work is advancing approaches to pain assessment, prevention, and treatment.

As #PainAwarenessMonth 2025 draws to a close, we wanted to highlight the social and psychosocial impact of chronic pain. Work by the #CRIISP consortium looked at the influence of relationships, lifestyle and work on chronic pain in this PPIE-driven systematic review

🟣 It’s the final day of #PainAwarenessMonth, so what better time to spotlight the invisible burden many people with #MultipleSclerosis carry.
A new study from our #MSResearch Flagship researchers found that 53% of over 1600 participants experience regular pain. 20% reported 5–10 different types.
Do you have unrealistic goals?

It's the last day of #PainAwarenessMonth so #LetsTalkAboutPain. Tell me what your number is on this pain scale. I'll start: My numbers are 10-13 every single day all month with 💩 hitting the fan in the late afternoon and drilling me through until 'bed time'. I'll be honest: I have suffered these past five weeks since my flight. Every day I've wondered how much more I can take! Let's move on to our more realistic chronic pain scale: 0-2 Really?! I didn't know this even existed. 3-4 My normal every day / lower normal. Can almost function as a normal person and very easy to hide. 5-6 Annoying. Also my normal on the medium day or after a busy day. Can normally continue every day things and can be hidden pretty well. 7-9 Angry. Irritable. Can be my background during high pain days. Often a warning of what is to come and when the mask starts to slip. Should plan to be home or close to home. Will be around close friends who understand only. 10-12 Nope. Intermittent crying. This is high background pain with multiple spasms / shocks an hour. Will need to go home now and will only be around those closest to me. Probably in bed resting. 13+ No words to describe. Uncontrolled. Inconsolable or silent. Unable to move. Should probably see a doctor but I never do. It will pass! Credit @PinkyAndThePain Other than talking about being outside my home and around other people I'd say this paint scale is pretty accurate. #PAM2025 #MySeveralWorlds #ChronicPainIs uncontrolled this month.

Here's a good reminder from Arthritis Foundation to keep in mind with exercise and arthritis pain. The reason I post this today is because in 2009 when I experienced knee swelling and pain just before I got my axSpA diagnosis, I thought a gentle walk might help. I got myself into a situation where my legs gave out and I could not get home. That is when I realized I needed medical attention and the ER doctors I saw in Taiwan immediately suspected inflammatory arthritis. That urge to move is strong because arthritis patients know 'motion is lotion'. If we don't use it, we lose it! But we also need to remember our joints can only handle so much and often 'rest is best'. As we wrap up September and this huge awareness month, I hope you found my posts helpful! Today I made an image for a fan of this page. I can't tag her as we're not friends but her words resonated deeply enough that I had to create it in detail. Sandie's words to describe pain earlier this month were, "That would be "my little dwarf with a pick axe" pain..." So appropriate! Here he is for #PainAwarenessMonth! #PAM2025 #MySeveralWorlds
