It's the last day of #PainAwarenessMonth so #LetsTalkAboutPain.

Tell me what your number is on this pain scale.

I'll start: My numbers are 10-13 every single day all month with 💩 hitting the fan in the late afternoon and drilling me through until 'bed time'.

I'll be honest: I have suffered these past five weeks since my flight. Every day I've wondered how much more I can take!

Let's move on to our more
realistic chronic pain scale:

0-2
Really?! I didn't know this even existed.

3-4
My normal every day / lower normal. Can almost function as a normal person and very easy to hide.

5-6
Annoying. Also my normal on the medium day or after a busy day. Can normally continue every day things and can be hidden pretty well.

7-9
Angry. Irritable. Can be my background during high pain days. Often a warning of what is to come and when the mask starts to slip.

Should plan to be home or close to home. Will be around close friends who understand only.

10-12
Nope. Intermittent crying. This is high background pain with multiple spasms / shocks an hour. Will need to go home now and will only be around those closest to me. Probably in bed resting.

13+
No words to describe. Uncontrolled. Inconsolable or silent. Unable to move. Should probably see a doctor but I never do. It will pass!

Credit @PinkyAndThePain

Other than talking about being outside my home and around other people I'd say this paint scale is pretty accurate.

Here's a good reminder from Arthritis Foundation to keep in mind with exercise and arthritis pain.

The reason I post this today is because in 2009 when I experienced knee swelling and pain just before I got my axSpA diagnosis, I thought a gentle walk might help. I got myself into a situation where my legs gave out and I could not get home. That is when I realized I needed medical attention and the ER doctors I saw in Taiwan immediately suspected inflammatory arthritis.

That urge to move is strong because arthritis patients know 'motion is lotion'. If we don't use it, we lose it! But we also need to remember our joints can only handle so much and often 'rest is best'.

As we wrap up September and this huge awareness month, I hope you found my posts helpful!

EXERCISE AND ARTHRITIS PAIN
STOP ACTIVITY WHEN:

🔴 Pain is sharp or intense
🔴 Joints become swollen or hot
🔴 Joint feels unstable or unable to support your weight
🔴 Persistent fatigue or discomfort after exercise

Today I made an image for a fan of this page. I can't tag her as we're not friends but her words resonated deeply enough that I had to create it in detail.

Sandie's words to describe pain earlier this month were, "That would be "my little dwarf with a pick axe" pain..."

So appropriate! Here he is for #PainAwarenessMonth!

My painting carries with it the message of pain." ~ Frida Kahlo

Kahlo is a feminist icon because of her art, character, and activism. She is best known for her intimate paintings and self portraits which were seen as revolutionary for her time.

Disabled by polio as a child, Kahlo had been a promising student heading for medical school. At the age of 18, she was gravely injured in bus accident that resulted in 32 surgeries and caused lifelong pain and medical problems. During her recovery, she started painting again. Having loved painting as a child, she became enamored with becoming an artist.

Kahlo has painted some of the most recognizable art in the world. She painted in bed and often painted herself in recovery in her creations.

Through her many self-portraits she was able to project her pain onto the canvas. This enabled her to relieve herself from the burden of dealing with her agony."

"I've said this many times: Pain is the #1 symptom for which people consult doctors. Abuse of opioids by pain patients is extremely rare. Not treating people who are in pain is barbaric. It's unfortunate that so many doctors are so far behind the times as regards these topics."

Dr. Smith is my friend. He is also a pain patient and understands first hand how bad things are for pain patients these days. I feel like to speak with doctors and experts regularly on this topic! He is always kind and prompt with his replied to my posts.

"For so many, the path to diagnosis is long and dehumanising. Years of symptoms dismissed. Tests coming back “normal." Being told it's anxiety, depression, attention-seeking— anything but real. You start to question your own experience. That kind of trauma leaves scars.

Chronic physical pain changes you. It chips away at your sense of safety, your confidence, your connection to the world. It can be profoundly isolating—and yet it's rarely recognised as a mental health issue in itself."

Your body and brain feel like they are breaking down and wrong.

Why Pain Goes Crazy in Fibromyalgia

"In fibromyalgia, even small things like wearing clothes hurt a lot because the nerves that sense pain are super sensitive. It's like the volume on a radio being turned up too high.

Normally, your body can turn down this "volume" when it's not needed, but in fibromyalgia, it stays loud. This happens because the body's alarm system, called the fight-or-flight response, keeps sending signals that make the nerves extra sensitive.

Also, too many pain signals from muscles and tissues overwhelm the body's control system, making the pain worse."
