Had a close look at a small marshy pool near Howgate that I often see Snipe feeding in during the winter - today the plants included Ivy-leaved Crowfoot, Floating Sweet-grass, Blinks and Bog Stitchwort - none of which I had knowingly seen before #panspecieslisting 2305
Toothwort - Lathraea squamaria- a parasitic plant lacking chlorophyll growing at the base of a tree
Purple Toothwort Lathraea clandestina an introduced parasitic species
Slender Speedwell Veronica filiformis in the lawn in the estate - I will have seen this many times but without identifying it
Wavy Bittercress Cardamine flexuosa - another common plant that I have totally overlooked previously
Four plants from yesterday: Toothwort and Purple Toothwort in Roslin Glen and Slender Speedwell and Wavy Bittercress in Penicuik. All species I’ve likely seen before but this time I’ve taken the time to look 🌱 👀 @bsbiscotland.bsky.social #panspecieslisting now at 2300
Spent a lovely couple of hours with the Black-throated Thrush in the Lammermuirs this evening as it fed on worms in the sheep field to the north of the B6355 - it’s a great looking bird @colindavison.bsky.social #birdingscotland #panspecieslisting number 2294
Spiky bill with pale base and pretty bright super - but luckily it was singing constantly!
Longer winged than Chiffchaff - the bird was singing constantly
Wing formula looks good 👍
Sonogram of song from Merlin - it didn’t have any suggestions
Well that was unexpected! A singing Iberian Chiffchaff in Pease Dean SWT - not bad getting a self-found British tick on a casual walk with friends and family - optics or camera so a bit of panic at first 😂 #scottishbirding #panspecieslisting number: 2291 and possibly only the 10th Scottish record
A bit of time at the microscope today checking moss ID confirmed a few new species including the Heath Plait-moss and Sphagnum fallax (stem leaf shown). I also bumped into this lovely Bronze Shield-bug today and in all now at #panspecieslisting number 2290
A Threadwort with sparse leaves along stem
Leaves lacking teeth and stem opaque
Eventually found some perianths to examine
Elongated cells at the mouth of the perianth
A new liverwort that took a little bit of effort. Spotted by luck when using microscope. A threadwort sp and given how sparse the leaves are thought I’d better find a perianth or two… Took a long time but confirmed hopefully as Heath Threadwort, Cephaloziella stellulifera #panspecieslisting no: 2283
Common Pocket-Moss in situ
Pockets visible on the underside of the leaflets
No border of cells to the leaf
Nerve running to end of the leaf
My first pocket moss took me a wee while to identify yesterday and it turned out to be the Common Pocket-moss, Fissidens taxifolius. You can see where the pocket is in the leaf and it helps to trap water - presumably encouraging capillary action of water. #panspecieslisting number 2282
A few new species from Penicuik area today: Birch Woodwort, Spanish Gorse (presumably a garden escape), Tasgius morsitans - a rove beetle that seems to have very few records in Scotland and a common bog moss with cow horns Sphagnum auriculatum #panspecieslisting numbers 2279-2282
Working my way backwards through some photos from Monday’s plankton trawl and it looks like this diatom is Mediopyxis helysia - a species new to the #PanSpeciesListing site on Bubo. Species: 2278 (and another few hundred unidentified pics still to sort through 😂)@elizabethbeston.bsky.social
Bibio johannis or Johann’s Bibio identified by Ian Andrews (Orphrys) on iNaturalist from this image - checking the Stephen Falk I can now see the dark stigma present on wings plus brownish colouration on hind tibia
Saw my first St Mark’s Fly of the season yesterday emerging from the turf at Pease Bay. Clearly smaller than the classic species, I assumed that it would not be possible to ID but a combination of help on iNaturalist and the new Flies book nails it as Bibio johannis #panspecieslisting Species # 2277
Cave at Pease Bay
Eucladium verticillatum in situ
Long thin leaves with calcium salt crystals attached
Colourless cells at base of leaf with teeth in this area but not elsewhere on margin
Popped into the wee cave at Pease Bay today - some nice patches of Eucladium verticillatum on the roof and walls. It’s also called the Lime-seep or Whorled Tufa-moss and I think it’s common in other similar places #panspecieslisting Species: 2276
There is still a White-billed Diver at Pease Bay - that’s 5 weeks now - usually out at the furthest lobster pots so definitely a scope job. Also got some nudibranch action with Velvet Dorid, Sea Hare and Sea Lemons pictured here #birdingscotland #panspecieslisting
Rose Aphid Macrosiphum rosae
Honeysuckle Aphid Hyadaphis passerinii
Honeysuckle Whitefly Aleyrodes lonicerae
First Sand Martin and Chiffchaff of the year made me think there might be a few aphids around. A quick look in the front garden revealed Rose Aphid, Honeysuckle Aphid and Honeysuckle Whitefly 3 PSL ticks 😁. Sunshine brought out lots of raptors too Golden Eagle and Merlin the best #panspecieslisting
Goldeneye lichen
Goldeneye lichen
Another week and another Goldeneye Lichen. This was one of two found today at Morlais Quarry, Merthyr @sewbrec.org.uk #panspecieslisting
Cover of book Pan-species Listing by Graeme Lyons.
Really enjoying this by @graemelyons.bsky.social
I don't think I'll ever become a super-naturalist but I'll have fun trying!
#PanSpeciesListing
This is already out of date (I am actually on 837 species) but have a look anyhow... #panspecieslisting #6000speciesin2026 #biologicalrecording @sussexwildlife.bsky.social analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.com/2026/01/6000...
Found some Wart Barnacles (Verruca stroemia) washed up on a piece of net yesterday. All of the larger individuals had Foraminiferans on them, mostly Lobatula lobatula which commonly lives on other species apparently - happy to see them in situ #panspecieslisting
Maidenhair Spleenwort
Broom Fork-moss
Scaly Pelt Lichen (?)
Black Witches’ Butter (?)
Lovely walk to Penicuik House Estate added a species I’ve definitely seen before (Maidenhair Spleenwort) and one that I’ve not noticed before (Broom Fork-moss). Also, though I’m not 💯 confident of either, Scaly Pelt Lichen and Black Witches’ Butter - happy to be corrected #panspecieslisting
A parasitic wasp with white-banded black and orange abdomen, plus yellow and black legs and antennae.
Whilst unloading the moth trap at #RSPBLakenheathFen I was thoroughly distracted by this Ichnuemon Wasp, which I think is Eutanyacra picta, with only 1 confirmed UK record on the NBN atlas! #PSL #PanSpeciesListing
Mark Telfer and I only went and refound Aulonia albimana on the Isle of Wight two days ago! Quite possibly the best spider find of my life! Lots of other records too. analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.com/2025/10/whit...

Talk time at our Wicken Fen field meeting, with Richard Gallon on how to look for spiders in the variety of GB habitats and the one and only Graeme Lyons on the how and why of #PanSpeciesListing
This Little Rock Goby got my pan species list to the 2500 mark #PanSpeciesListing #PSL #fish
Was very pleased to find this massive Stentor coeruleus in a pond in Edinburgh yesterday- it’s not often you see bright blue single celled organism that’s visible to the naked eye #protist #panspecieslisting
This Pandemis cinnamomeana was species 1000 for our small suburban garden. Barred hook-tip was 1001, would have been a nicer milestone. Species breakdown for anyone vaguely interested. #panspecieslisting @graemelyons.bsky.social
Also, a lifer for me! #PanSpeciesListing
Nice to visit the local Sunflower 🌻 trail yesterday, plenty of #fungi to see. Probably the only one looking at leaf moulds as I went round, 5 species plus some arable weeds. 😁🌼🍄🟫 #panspecieslisting #widerscope #sunflowertrail ##mushrooms #leafmould
Aulagromyza populi gallery mines on Populus. All shots of the same leaf: upperside full leaf and detail on left, underside full leaf and detail on right. Humberstone, Leics. (UK) 17/08/2025.
Aulagromyza populi gallery mines on Populus. All shots of the same leaf: upperside full leaf and detail on left (with pupa showing), underside full leaf and detail on right. Humberstone, Leics. (UK) 17/08/2025.
A new miner for me, likely one I've overlooked or ignored in the past. On a tall Lombardy Poplar (or maybe a hybrid Black of some sort). Aulagromyza populi gallery mines with in-situ pupae. These examples show the mine moving from the underside to upperside. #diptera #agromyzidae #panspecieslisting
1/3 #speciesaday no. 642 is Musk Orchid (Herminium monorchis). Vulnerable, Nationally Scarce and Section 41. A diminutive yellow-green orchid of short, warm places on the Downs. Smells of honey when in flower. All my records are between 24th June and 1st August. #orchids #panspecieslisting #flowers
Opsius stactogalus. Whetstone, Leics. (UK) 18/07/2025, attracted to 125W MV light trap operated overnight. First VC55 record.
The main highlight from my Whetstone Leics. light trap last night was not a moth. Amongst the various non-leps was this leafhopper, the first VC55 record for Opsius stactogalus which is a Tamarisk feeder (no Tamarisk around my garden). A new one for me. #panspecieslisting #hemiptera #homoptera #bugs
In 2016, I did a psl big year. On 3 July I recorded spp no 1000. Roll on 9 yrs and my second psl big year. Last nights moth trap produced 7nfy, with Dark Spectacle being spp 2000 for the year. #panspecieslisting
