This Alga Rewrites the Rules of Photosynthesis To Survive in the Dark A hidden rearrangement of ordinary chlorophyll allows certain algae to access light others cannot. Life in dim environments pushes photosynthetic organisms to their limits. In places where sunlight is scarce or filtered, some species have evolved ways to use parts of the light spectrum that most others cannot. A new study from Osaka Metropolitan University reveals how a freshwater alga extends its reach into far-red light by reorganizing one of biology’s most familiar molecules. Far-red light carries less energy than the wavelengths typically used in photosynthesis, which is why most plants and algae rely on visible red and blue light instead. Yet in dense forests or sediment-rich water, those higher-energy wavelengths are often absorbed before they can penetrate deeper layers. What remains is far-red light, and for most organisms, it is not enough. “Whilst certain cyanobacteria use specialized chlorophylls to absorb far-red light, many plants and algae achieve the same effect by reorganizing ordinary chlorophyll a into cooperative assemblies within their photosynthetic antennas,” said Ritsuko Fujii, lead author and associate professor at the Graduate School of Science and Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Osaka Metropolitan University. Chlorophyll a is a pigment that cannot absorb far-red light on its own...

(C) Temperature response curves for CO2 assimilation and PSII quantum yield for two species exhibiting contrasting responses, as presented in Fig. 4C. The schematic highlights shifts in ATP and NADPH investment between PSII maintenance and Rubisco activation energy. The large curved arrow indicates the direction of resource allocation involving ATP, NADPH, and the energetic costs of D1 and turnover of other proteins. Machine learning-accelerated discovery of covalent organic frameworks for hydrogen peroxide photosynthesis Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) serves as both an environmentally benign oxidant and an energy carrier, with broad applications ranging from chemical manufacturing to energy technologies1,2,3,4 and an expected value of US$15.4 billion by 20305,6. While current industrial production via the anthraquinone process is energy-intensive and environmentally taxing7,8,9, photocatalytic synthesis using only H2O, O2 and sunlight presents an attractive and sustainable alternative10,11,12. However, conventional photocatalysts based on metal oxides, sulfides or carbon nitrides remain constrained for H2O2 photosynthesis by narrow optical absorption profiles and inefficient charge separation13,14. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) present a compelling solution through their precisely engineered π-conjugated systems, donor–acceptor (D–A) architectures and exceptional chemical stability. The structural tunability of COFs enables systematic optimization of photophysical properties and active sites for enhanced photocatalytic performance15,16,17,18. Nevertheless, our analysis of recently published studies reveals a pronounced performance gap (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Table 1); about 77% of reported COF photocatalysts demonstrate modest H2O2 production rates below 2,000 μmol h−1 g−1, and only 4% exceed 6,000 μmol h−1 g−1. This striking disparity underscores the critical challenge and urgent need to develop innovative COF materials capable of achieving efficient H2O2 photosynthesis. The development of high-performance COF photocatalysts faces fundamental challenges rooted in both mechanistic...

Effect of microclimate and photosynthesis on strawberry reproductive growth in a greenhouse: using cumulative leaf photosynthesis as an index to predict the time of harvest We evaluate whether cumulative photosynthesis (An,C) could predict the time of harvest in strawberry better than light (IC) or temperature (Ta,C) as forecast indices. We monitored the daily dynamics of flowering, fruit set, and harvest in over 2,700 fruits across the growing season in a greenhouse in Japan.
