In Northwold at a lovely low-key event for their annual blessing of the plough. We processed behind the plough following Morris dancers and music to arrive at the church ready for its blessing. God Speed the Plough ! #ploughmonday #tradition #backtowork #folklore #morrisdancing

I was busy editing yesterday and forgot about Plough Monday! The start of the agricultural year when everyone got back to work after the Christmas festivities. This window is at St Mary’s Berry Pomeroy, Devon.

Miss Julia White learnt to plough with horses, aged 40, from Jack Tucker in wartime, in the fields I know & love. I learnt (in theory) from her words, & as I recreated & reanimated them, & walked those furrows. Here’s an extract & a song for #PloughMonday from #GhostsoftheFarm, & a photo of Jack 1/4
Today is #PloughMonday and here are Molly Dancers outside Holy Trinity Church in #Cambridge.
Plough Witches and Mumpers in Peterborough. Peterborough Advertiser 1899. #PloughMonday
From the Peterborough Advertiser, 1911. This memory came from an interview with Mrs Lemmon of Whittlesey. She was born in 1820! #PloughMonday
Today is the first Monday after epiphany and marks the traditional start of the agricultural year and known as #PloughMonday. Our favourite Hilda Zigomala depicts ploughing in Lombardy from 1909
Today is #PloughMonday. Thomas Tusser called it one of the feasts 'belonging to the plough' that employers in #earlymodern England should never forget.
Here I explore these holidays where work & play mingled: how the festive shaped #labour relations.

'God Speed the Plough!' it's #PloughMonday today, when the ploughmen, having had their ploughs blessed on the Sunday, would go out a-visiting round the houses - but here's a ploughman at work at Ebrington, #Gloucestershire, by Christopher Webb, 1964.

Some old plough drawings I did a while ago for #PloughMonday. All are early tractor-drawn ploughs. The first one was at Carreg Cennen castle in Wales, t'others at the east Kent Museum of Farming. All drawn with Rotring pens.

Today is #PloughMonday - the traditional day when our rural ancestors would celebrate going back into the fields after the end of the Christmas celebrations. Find out more about how Plough Monday is celebrated with our guide:

Today's the day - back to the fields/the concrete jungle. At this rate, we'll need to have a lie down 😴

In a stubble field backed by woodland, a pair of farm workers are tilting a traditional blue and red balance plough on its centre axle. A black steam ploughing engine sits behind the plough and connected to it, with two people on the footplate. Further away, a very similar ploughing engine that is black with orange wheels is releasing excess steam through its safety valves.
#PloughMonday is upon us once more as another agricultural year begins.
...
Let us hope the weather is kind and the harvests are bountiful.

It’s #PloughMonday & here is Julia White’s 1st plough. She pioneered farming 1941-1955, & with her farmer-partner Doris, pulled the plough up the church aisle to be blessed each year. I’m grateful I got to tell their story, & laugh with, listen to, & interrogate their ghosts. #GhostsoftheFarm
