An excerpt from a poem by Tom Atkins. A rainy day in Venice. No light filters in the cathedral windows. Only a dull grayness. It is flood season and the women wear waders instead of fashionable pumps. They become practical instead of glamorous. Cafes have water ankle level but still the regulars are there, reading their paper by the grey light, sipping cappuccino, nonchalant, as if this, the messy darkness, is ordinary. And perhaps it is. Darkness in paradise, a challenge to find the bits of beauty that bring light even in the rain. You join them, hoping your boots are high enough to hold out the water, rediscovering paradise… A landscape oriented image taken in the half light of morning as the Rialto Market sets up for the day ahead. Rain is falling and has already soaked the ground creating a glimmering reflection of the colours from the stalls. The market is in a square, to the right we can see an arch that is part of a series of arches that run beyond the frame, to the left we can just see the awnings on various shop fronts, at the back of the frame below the grey sky is a house that would be classed as grand anywhere other than Venice where the competition is high. Central sits the market stalls laden with fresh fruit and vegetables of all imaginable variety and colours.
