4eme de couverture : Roland Barthes avait pensé intituler une conférence «Proust et moi». Après réflexion, ill'appela « Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure». Non qu'il vît de la présomption dans la première formule. Employée par lui, disait-il, et non par un témoin, elle n'impliquait aucune comparaison, mais exprimait une identification. Loin de s'égaler à Proust, il entrait humblement dans ses pas. Si je le comprends bien, il y aurait eu de l'audace de ma part à nommer ce livre-ci « Roland et moi», puisque je l'ai vu vivre durant quelques années. N'ayant pas côtoyé Proust, rien ne l'empêchait de dire « Proust et moi», tandis que je ne pourrais pas écrire « Roland et moi» en toute simplicité. En vérité, il ne s'agit ni de se comparer ni de s'identifier, mais, trente-cinq ans après sa mort, de revenir, comme je le fais souvent dans ma tête, sur notre amitié, d'en parcourir les étapes, de fouiller dans ma mémoire, de retrouver ce que je lui dois, de lui rendre grâce pour ce qu'il m'a donné, pour les progrès qu'il m'a fait faire. On ne se lance pas dans ce genre d'enquête si l'on ne se sent pas contraint et forcé. On y résiste jusqu'au moment où elle s'impose. Ceci est ma recherche de Roland. A.
