It was another beautiful day, Sunny and wonderful. I spent hours at a local nature center. Lot's of the usual pretty residents! Spotted this RWBB female. Female Red-winged Blackbirds are easily distinguished from males by their muted, streaky brown plumage, resembling a large, dark sparrow. They are stocky and broad-shouldered with a slender, conical bill, and are often confused with sparrows due to their similar appearance.

It was a beautiful day here, we reached 80 degrees! Sunny and wonderful. So I spent the day at a nature center. Lot's of the usual pretty residents! Here is my favorite harbinger of Spring, the Red-winged Blackbird. I just like the shot. Known for their distinct red and yellow shoulder patches, particularly in males. The shot is of a male perched on a cattail reed. The background is light browns.

An immature red winged black bird on the north creek wetlands at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Immature males also have red shoulder patches but can be sooty-brown and appear mottled. Red-winged blackbirds are medium-sized song birds with a length of approximately 17 to 23 centimetres and weigh 32 to 77 grams. Females are somewhat smaller than males.

Red-winged blackbirds are known for their distinctive shoulder patches, or epaulets, that flash red when they fly. Red-winged blackbirds migrate in large flocks during the day. Their spring migration takes place from mid-February through mid-May, and their fall migration begins as early as August. Males return before females in the spring and leave after females in the fall.
