A mature male Scarce Chaser clings to a branch above a fishing lake. He is a medium-sized dragonfly with a hairy dark brown thorax and a chalky blue abdomen with a black tip. His eyes are pale blue and his face is black. His wings are clear, except for black pterostigmata, and black patches at the wing bases with a hint of yellow staining around them. The background is a diffuse pale blue, and the dragonfly and his perch are centred in the bottom right corner of the image, leaving quite a lot of clean negative space.

A fresh female Scarce Chaser hangs from the top of a broken stem, her back to the camera in half profile. She is a medium-sized dragonfly, primarily orange but with an interlinking series of black marks down the centre of her abdomen, and deep red eyes. Her wings are clear except for some orange veining towards the front edge of their bases, a black triangle at the base of each hind wing, and black pterostigmata. As she matures the orange veins will fade, but the black marks will not. The background of the image is a diffuse blur of green, cream and brown.

He is a medium-sized dragonfly with a black face and blue eyes. His thorax is a dusty brown-black, and his abdomen is covered with a chalky pale blue coating known as pruinescence or pruinosity. A pair of Scarce Chasers in the mating wheel position on a dead stem. The male on the right of the image, has a hairy brown thorax and a chalky blue abdomen. His face is black and his eyes are blue, with a small area of purply-red at the back edges. The female, on the left, is orangey brown. Her face is orange, and her eyes are red above and green below. The male's abdomen is curved up over her face and head, and the claspers at the end of his abdomen are holding the back of her head. She is bent round in a sitting position, with her abdomen laid along the stem underneath the male's, so that her genitalia, at the end of her abdomen, can lock into his, which are located below his second abdominal segment. She has her first pair of legs crooked just below her head, in a resting position that's common for chaser dragonflies, but her middle and back legs are wrapped around his abdomen, where this and other matings have caused a patch of the blue chalky coating to be rubbed away, revealing the dark red carapace beneath.

An immature male Scarce Chaser clings to a dead stem. The image is cropped square so that only his head and thorax can be seen, along with his wings which are wrapped forwards on either side of the stem. He is a medium-sized dragonfly, and because he is very fresh he's largely orange, with black legs, and eyes that are a kind of muddy red on top and green below. His wings are mainly clear, but they have networks of bright orange veins towards their front edges, and the hind wings have a black patch at their bases. The costa - the thick vein along the front of each wing - is black, and so are the wing spots. As this dragonfly matures his thorax will darken to brown and his abdomen will acquire the chalky blue coating called pruinescence. His face will turn black, and his eyes will change to a clear light blue.
A female Beautiful Demoiselle stands on a nettle leaf. She is a large metallic green and gold damselfly, with shimmering golden wings. She has angled her abdomen upwards, so she slants down through the image from the top right corner towards the bottom left. She is holding her wings slightly apart.
