Several light tan mushrooms with white speckles grow in a lawn. They are in various stages of growth, from darker button to flattening caps. They were too close to the ground for a stem shot. I could have pulled one out, but hesitate to do that in people's yards.

Amanita pantherinoides, the western panther amanita, is very toxic. Apparently it usually grows under firs in the forest, but here it is under a fir in the city.

A florid garden under cherry trees is full of white and yellow daffodils at the foot of a mossy retaining wall. A mass of yellow and orange tulips is blooming in the garden above, next to some sword ferns. . Behind them is a patch of dark red hellebores. And up against the front porch is a rhododendron bush full of cerise flowers. If you look closely, you can see pots of plants ready to be dug in.

The lady on the corner who has the huge collection of hellebores now has spring flowers galore. I can hardly wait to see what she has in store for later. And her cherry trees are magnificent too.

A small clump of slightly bedraggled violets glow in purple shades next to their blue green heart-shaped leaves. The leaves look pretty rough as well. The violers have a nice open flower with five asymmetrical purple petals leading to a streaky white and yellow heart.

A few wide open tulip magnolia flowers display the ovary inside, looking like a pyramid of pointy dark yellow beads. The flower petals are splayed in the dappled sun, with pink bases fading to creamy white tips. You can see a blurred wall of green tree leaves in the background, with the top showing a blue sky festooned with pink and white flowers

The weather really battered the violets and the tulip magnolias, one so low to the ground, the other so high in the sky... but although ragged, they still are beautiful

Frilly ruffles of Trametes versicolor pour down a crack in a cherry tree trunk. It looks like the fall of riffled on a shirt front, in shades of brown, rust and cream. The undersides are buffy white with a rough, porous surface. The tree bark on each side of the ruffles is very coarse, with some blue green lichen, and tiny spots of green and yellow lichen.

Lady ferns (Athyrium filix-femina) fiddle heads are unfurling next to a decaying trunk. The trunk is covered at the top with mossy patches. The ground underneath is covered with leaf duff and small plants, including creeping buttercup. Lady fern leaves have a feathery appearance when fully unfurled, and can be up to 5 feet high, although around here they seem to stay under 2 feet.

Samonberry flowers vary in color, from almost white to a deep magenta pink. I just learned that salmonberries can ripen to either red or orange, which are equally uninteresting watery berries.

A couple of bright white damson plum flowers adorn a branch full of buds. The afternoon sun highlights the white petals. The golden yellow anthers and pistils cast shadows on the petals. To me, the anthers look a bit like cat whiskers!

Rosy pink crabapple flower buds cluster along a leafy branch. The leaved are narrowly lanceolate and dentate. The flower buds look like little bundles barely held together by their sepals. You can see a bright blue sky in the background.

A very nice, rectangular chicken coop with a shaded patio. A cedar plank henhouse has a nice wood ramp for ease of hen access. The whole is enclosed in chicken wire. A nice brick modified Tudor Revival house can be seen hiding behind the coop.

A mound of light green to olive green leaves grows along the side of a trail. The leaves are rounded, with irregular lobes. The veins are clearly demarcated in a dark olive green. This patch is rather small, growing amid the dead tree leaves of last fall, but it is easy to see why fringecups are a popular ground cover in PNW gardens.

A purple anemone flower has a ring of petals surrounding a heart of golden stamens. It is in a bed of soft green leaves, with a couple of buds getting ready to bloom nearby. Everything is bedewed with drops of rain.

Epimedium, also known as bishops hats, has graceful little yellow flowers on long stems floating above the heart shaped leaves. The flowers hang upside down, with four yellow sepals sticking out over a small yellow corolla, looking a bit like a hat on top of a head. The leaves are a tender green with shades of bronze. Rain drops hang from stems here and there. These are growing next yo a gray rock, providing nice color and texture contrasts.

Tiny lavender pink cranesbill flowers grace a park lawn. The five petaled flowers have little white stamens and a bright pink pistil with a star-shaped tip. The leaves surrounding the flowers are abundant, hairy, and feathery looking. There are a few clover leaves poking out here and there. There are a lot of weedy cranesbill species! This one is Erodium cicutarium, also called redstem filaree or storks bill.

This close up of a branch of Viburnum tinus, popularly called laurestine because the leaves look like bay laurel, is covered with clusters of white flowers and round pink buds. The shrub is very appealing with a sweeping rounded shape, making for an attractive border.

A gray rock in a wall is invaded by life. A patch of powdery green pixie cup lichen sports lovely cup-like apothecia. Tiny bright green sempervivum plants with their red edged serrated leaves packed in tight rosettes have a foothold in the leaf duff collected in the rock crevice. Other lichen can be seen growing in the background, as well as some olive green moss.

Bright magenta rhododendron blossoms fan out from the end of a branch like a fireworks burst. The five petaled flowers have long pink anthers and a light pink pistil tipped with magenta. The leathery oval leaves are dark green, a perfect foil for the bright flowers.

Small bright green Polypodium glycyrrhiza fern leaves grow upside down in a bright olive green moss bed on a big leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) branch. You can see a profusion of mossy and lichenous tree branches in the background. This was photographed from a foot bridge over a ravine, looking straight into the crowns of the trees growing in the ravine floor.

An array of green mosses and lichen in various shades of blue to blue-green cover an apple tree branch crotch. There are flat growing shield lichen, a few branching lichens, both sturdy looking and lacy, and prickly looking moss branches. It is a medley of textures. Apple trees seem to have the best lichens and mosses.
