It’s that time of year: the pitcher pool is beginning to fill with bog violet blooms! I probably have hundreds of them out there (and they’re always sprouting more from seeds every spring) so given another couple weeks and it’ll be a violet carpet.

Small, wild purple violets that just appeared thru a layer of leaf litter in the back of our garden. Between their butterfly like petals and sprays of green foliage, they brighten up an otherwise dreary spot. Although, to be fair, leaf litter has been very good cover in many areas of our small garden spaces. It gives a layer of protection in Winter. But also, slugs and worms will nibble on dead leaves, carrying their “dinner” down into the soil, which actually helps to enrich it. It’s a win-win for the invertebrates and our garden! Please Garden for Wildlife, however you can - its’s one of the best things you can do to help so many species as habitats continue to disappear or be destroyed all over this old World. Nature needs all the help we can give. ~💞
