These hearts are handmade by Rob Wadds of Canada. He uses reclaimed timber from Vancouver Island to create them.

A sunburst shaped splash of hot pink on white petals, with speckled interior cup of the center of a gloxinia (sinningia speciosa). There's pollen caked on the tips of the stamens, two shaped like hearts. There's a bright yellow line at the base of the pistil.

A black and white macro image of sweet potato vines and their heart shaped leaves.

The vines have been growing from a comically large potato which arrived in a grocery order last June. I have done nothing whatsoever to deserve it's lovely greenery, it just grows and somehow never dries out or molds. It's the best house plant I have ever had.

Did some technical tips reading this afternoon & sat down with the macro lens & Sweetums the Immortal Sweet Potato to test out shooting on Aperture mode (been mainly using Program). Think I'm going to stick with it for a bit!

The image is a striking black-and-white macro photograph of a single flower, capturing it in a moment of dramatic, high-contrast isolation against a void-like, pitch-black background. The flower, a geranium Pelargonium, a multi-petaled variety, dominates the frame with its intricate, sculptural form.
The lack of colour shifts the focus entirely to the complex interplay of light, shadow, texture, and organic geometry. The petals are the primary subject, unfolding from a central point in a series of layered, undulating waves. Some petals are wide and rounded, while others are smaller, more delicate, and tightly curled near the heart of the bloom. A key feature is the visible venation; fine, dark lines trace the pathways of nutrients across the petal surfaces, resembling the delicate webbing of an insect's wing or a topographical map of a ridged landscape. These veins provide a sense of structural integrity and biological complexity. The lighting is directional and evocative, coming from the upper left. This creates a brilliant highlight on the edges of the leftmost petals, giving them a luminous, almost crystalline quality. These bright areas transition into deep, velvety shadows where the petals overlap or tuck inward, creating a powerful sense of three-dimensional depth and volume. The centre of the flower is particularly intriguing, featuring several small, star-shaped reproductive structures, stamens/stigma that emerge from the shadowy core. These tiny elements provide a sharp, delicate counterpoint to the larger, flowing shapes of the petals.

The overall mood is one of quiet intensity and stark beauty. By stripping away colour, the I've placed emphasis on the raw, architectural elegance of nature. The sharp focus on the centre and the gradual softening of the petal edges toward the periphery draw the eye into the very heart of the blossom, inviting a contemplative study of its transient, fragile, and perfectly balanced form. Thank you for reading 🙏🏼☺️

Black and white image showing a closeup section of a chain link fence with dozens of small padlocks attached, many with names, initials, or dates noted. The rushing waters of a small waterfall can be seen through the fence. The image was processed with a Fujifilm film recipe based on the Ilford FP4 Plus 125 black & white film.

Here is a black and white nature photo of an acorn split in have, revealing its heart shape inside. The seed half rests in the upper left side, its top slightly tilts left on a fallen log. In the background, textures of cracks and wood chips dip in and out of the bokeh.

Fun fact: The average oak produces 2,000 to 10,000 acorns a year. During the tree’s “mast year,” which occurs every 2-5 years to ensure survival, it produces 10,000 acorns. Also known as bumper crops, this massive output helps the seeds escape being eaten. Nature is incredible. I couldn’t help but wonder, what about our output of love? Is more love in our lives the answer to our survival? Focusing on building supportive communities, friendship, and nurturing the land feels right. For us, every year can be a mast year; this realization inspired the latest alliterative senryu from my journal.

This is a horizontal photograph of a tree stump. When the photograph was taken, the tree had only recently been felled. The annual rings are visible and can still be counted. A heart has been carved into the stump using a chainsaw. The faint green of the forest is visible in the background. The photograph was taken in a forest near the Swiss town of Davos on 3 August 2011.

Once upon a time...
you were a tree, an old tree,
respected, admired

Until a storm struck you down,
and there you were
But: you received a new heart,
a new lease of life...

Passed on here
With love...
