9. April 1999, Platz der Republik, Berlin. - image: Michel Meijer

The photo series of construction machinery in Berlin is Michel Meijer's first photo project with the starting point being the question ‘What does something look like in a certain time and place?’ After several years of photographing according to the idea of Lomography without compelling rules, Michel Meijer started photographic documentation of different subjects. The series on construction machinery in Berlin was followed by photo documentations on religious events and cultural landscapes. More photos and information about the construction machinery project can be found on the website www.michelmeijer.net

Shape, color and composition are the main components of Heike Scholz's photographs. She finds these three components almost everywhere: in the city, in the countryside, in nature and at home. Her aesthetic photos function like small paintings and are a pleasure to the eye.

'Kulturbrauerei Berlin' - image: Thomas Hausstein

The Kulturbrauerei is a large building complex in Prenzlauer Berg that was originally built as a brewery, but now serves as a cultural centre with a dance club, pop venue, museum, cinema, etc.

Jobst Schultheiss took over the brewery from August Heinrich Prell, who had founded it in 1842 in Berlin-Mitte, in 1863. Ill health forced Jobst Schultheiss to sell the brewery to merchant and royal supplier Adolf Riesicke.

As Berlin grew rapidly and demand for beer increased, a new brewery was built on Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg. It was easier to build storage cellars at this location because it was on a hill and the groundwater level was lower. After modernisation and expansion, the company was converted into a public limited company in 1871 under the name Schultheiss' Brauerei Aktien-Gesellschaft.

Over the years, various expansions were carried out until the complex reached its current state in 1930. The building complex survived the Second World War relatively undamaged, allowing beer production to resume relatively quickly. Now as a Soviet public limited company.

In 1967, beer production at this location ceased and moved to Leninallee, now Landsberger Allee. From 1990 onwards, it was located on Indira-Gandhi-Straße in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen.

After the move, the East German state did not give the building complex any real new function, except for a youth centre and a furniture sales outlet, nor did it house any other businesses there. The buildings fell into disrepair. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Truehandliegenschaftgesellschaft took over the site and young artists and musicians squatted parts of the complex and founded the Kulturbrauerei foundation. They gave the beer brewery its name.

In the 1990s, the artists were given rental contracts and the organisation was improved. After a major renovation from 1998 to 2000, the Kulturbrauerei took on its current form, with a few minor changes.

Berlin, Straußberger Platz - image: Thomas Hausstein

For over fifteen years, Thomas Hausstein had a photography store in Berlin-Friedrichshain with its own black and white workshop and photo studio. Thomas was responsible for wedding photography and took portraits. When not in the shop, Thomas was riding his motorcycle across the country or taking photos in the city of Berlin. The store was a warm meeting point for photography enthusiasts and passport photo customers. In 2017, Thomas Hausstein closed his business because he felt that the store entailed too many responsibilities and too little fun with photography. Today in his spare time Thomas manages to enjoy photography again.

Capital Beach, Berlin 2006 - image: Radek Dabrowski & Michel Meijer

Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer started a joint photo project in 2006: vividly depicting well-known buildings and landmarks in Berlin. The photos were taken with a technical camera with the image format of 4 x 5 inches.

Meanwhile, 18 photos from this photo series have been released on postcard and 21 as a high quality print.

To do justice to the high image quality of the technical camera, the postcards have been printed in a finer grid. In addition, the postcards have been printed in a different format than standard postcards to make use of the full size of the 4 x 5-inch sheet film.

Karl-Marx-allee, Berlin 2018 - From the series 'THIS IS NOT ART!' - image: Michel Meijer

Twice a year, in April and September, the sun sets longitudinally on Frankfurter Allee and Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin. The sun then appears as a yellow, glowing circle next to the sphere of the Fernsehturm.

Michel Meijer photographs cityscapes, landscapes and people. Using these three disciplines, he creates photo stories about religious devotion and human activity in their own living environment. In addition, Michel Meijer works as a graphic designer and postcard publisher.

Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten, Berlin 2007. - image: Radek Dabrowski & Michel Meijer

In 2006 and 2007, Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer photographed urban landscapes in Berlin containing buildings well-known to the public. The aim was to give a vivid and natural impression of these buildings in a high technical quality. To achieve that goal, they chose not to exclude people from the photos. In the photos, the public, which walks around in and around the photographed building, function as extras and the building as the main character. This is not to say that the role of the people in the photo is unimportant. On the contrary: they contribute an important part to the atmosphere in the photo and reflect who the buildings are intended for: people. High technical quality and a high degree of freedom in photographic possibilities resulted in the use of a technical camera with accompanying lenses.

A key feature and the reason for the many photographic capabilities of the technical camera is that the front and back of the camera can move independently of each other. The front is the surface to which the lens is mounted and the back is the surface to which the light-sensitive layer is mounted. This can be a sensor or film material. By sliding and tilting the front and/or the back, the perspective in the photo can be changed.

The light-sensitive layer, in this case film material, in the camera that Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer used had a size of 4 x 5 inches. That is 10 x 12.5 cm. That's almost the same size as a postcard. This is much larger than the size in common photo cameras of 24 x 36 mm. And therefore makes it possible to take photos with much more detail. For high detail reproduction, a large film surface alone is not enough. A high-quality lens is equally important. And that too was what Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer had at their disposal.
