ALMA Maps Cold Gas Filaments in the Milky Way’s Central Region Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have created the most detailed image yet of the Milky Way's central region, known as the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). Spanning over 650 light-years, the image reveals a dense network of cold gas filaments surrounding the galaxy’s supermassive black hole. This cold gas serves as the raw material for star formation, and the survey, named ALMA CMZ Exploration Survey (ACES), provides unprecedented precision in mapping these structures. The data shows gas formations of varying scales, from massive clouds to smaller clumps near individual stars, as well as a surprisingly complex chemical environment including simple molecules like silicon monoxide and more complex organic compounds such as methanol and acetone. The CMZ hosts some of the Milky Way's most massive stars, many of which are short-lived and end in powerful supernovae or hypernovae. Researchers hope these observations will clarify how stars form in extreme environments and provide insight into galaxy evolution in conditions similar to the early universe.
