Stylops are one of strangest parasites. Often overlooked, they are not infrequent on some of larger Andrena bees in mid March. This example today in Bengeo garden shows Stylops female visible on last abdominal segment of unfortunate Andrena sp. host. #Strepsiptera

A fresh female Chocolate Mining Bee rests on the mottled greeny-yellow surface of an aucuba leaf. This is quite a large bee, at about 1.5cm in length. Her head, abdomen and legs are black with brown hair, and her thorax is dark brown with a rich chestnut-brown pile. She has a stylops - the head of a parasitic insect called a Strepsiptera - protruding between her fourth and fifth abdominal segments.
