Remembering Nino Vaccarella, born #OnThisDay in ’33. He started 4 #F1 GPs, for De Tomaso (privateer), Porsche, Lotus & Ferrari, but he was at his best in sports cars, winning Le Mans for Ferrari in ’64 & the #TargaFlorio in ’65 (Ferrari), ’71 (Alfa; pic) & ’75 (Alfa again).
#OnThisDay in 1917 was born Paul Frère, a hero to all motoring/motorsport journalists. Why? Because he wrote superbly about cars & racing but, almost uniquely for a writer, he also raced brilliantly himself - including in #F1. Pic: Frère, Mini, #TargaFlorio, ’63.

Remembering Roberto Bussinello, born #OnThisDay in ’27. He started 2 #F1 GPs for Isobele de Tomaso (Monza ’61) & Scuderia Centro Sud (Monza ’65) & was successful in sports cars before hanging up his helmet to become an Alfa Romeo engineer. Pic: Alfa Giulia TZ2, #TargaFlorio, ’65.
Nanni Galli, born #OnThisDay in ’40, drove 17 #F1 GPs but was better in sports cars & touring cars (career highlight: 2nd, #TargaFlorio, ’68, sharing an Alfa Tipo 33/2 with Ignazio Giunti). He died in 2019, at 79, & his funeral was held in Gothic-Romanesque Prato Cathedral (pic).
Remembering Gerhard Mitter, born #OnThisDay in ’35. He started 5 #F1 GPs, best 4th (Nürburgring ’63, in an old Porsche 718), & was a sports car ace in Porsches. Check out this fab pic of him getting into the Porsche 908/2 that he & Udo Schütz drove to #TargaFlorio victory in ’69.

#AnorakFact: one of the all-time greats, Achille Varzi (pic) was the first man to win the #TargaFlorio & the #MilleMiglia in the same year (’34). He scored many great victories &, later, he became addicted to morphine. He was killed in an Alfa at Bremgarten #OnThisDay in ’48.
Vic Elford was born #OnThisDay in ’35. A sports car legend - a 2-time Le Mans victor & a winner at Nürburgring, Sebring, Daytona, the #TargaFlorio (pic: Porsche 907, ’68) & other places too - he also raced in #F1 (4th on his GP debut), #CanAm & #Nascar, & he won rallies as well.
Remembering Franco Rol, born #OnThisDay in 1908. He drove 5 GPs, his first at Monaco in ’50 (Maserati; pic), but he was better in sports cars, placing well in the #TargaFlorio & #MilleMiglia & winning at Pescara in heavy rain, for which big balls would have been required.
Remembering Pete Westbury, ’63 & ’64 British hillclimb champ, born #OnThisDay in ’38. In ’63 he drove a self-built Felday, & in ’64 a 4wd Ferguson. He finished 5th in the ’71 #TargaFlorio in a Lola shared with Mike Parkes. Pic: he drove one GP, Nürburgring ’69, in an #F2 Brabham.
On a list of cool & true statements that a person can make, “I shared a Maserati A6GCS Fantuzzi with Juan Manuel Fangio on the ’53 #TargaFlorio & we finished 3rd” must rank pretty damn’ high. Who could have said it? Sergio Mantovani, that’s who, born #OnThisDay in ’29.

Bob Bondurant was born #OnThisDay in ’33. He drove 9 #F1 GPs (best 4th, Monaco ’66, BRM) & was a sports car ace, as shown in this pic of him in the Shelby Cobra shared with Phil Hill in the ’64 #TargaFlorio. He & Dan Gurney won their class in a similar car at Le Mans that year.
