Tessellation Arctic — Penrose-inspired aperiodic tiling in arctic blues.
Tessellation Arctic. Penrose-inspired aperiodic tiling that never repeats.
Five-fold symmetry in arctic blues — the same pattern that appears in quasicrystals.

This is an aperiodic tiling that would generate a fractal if it had an infinite number of smaller tiles.

"Sky and Water I" by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, first created in June 1938. This artwork is a classic example of tessellation and the interplay of positive and negative space. Description of the Artwork Transformation and Duality: The print masterfully depicts a seamless metamorphosis where black birds in the upper section of the image gradually transform into white fish in the lower section. This creates an optical illusion that challenges the viewer's perception of figure and ground. Positive and Negative Space: In the top half, the black birds are the positive space against a white background (the "sky"), while the white shapes form the negative space. This relationship is reversed in the bottom half, where the white fish become the positive space against a black background ( the "water"), and the black shapes form the negative space. Tessellation: Escher utilized the mathematical concept of tessellation, where geometric shapes repeat without any gaps or overlaps, to create the smooth, interlocking pattern of the birds and fish. In the horizontal middle band, the birds and fish are equally foreground and background elements. Symbolism: While Escher insisted the work was not a commentary on evolution, viewers often interpret it as a poetic meditation on connection and the fluid boundaries between different elements of nature. This print is one of Escher's most popular works and is widely known for its ability to deceive the eye through an impossible yet visually consistent transformation.

"Ninja Star" tessellation, which I came up with today. The photos show the basic pattern and the tessellated form, against the light and front lit (different sides). Someone may have come up with this already (I'm not well versed in existing patterns) but it's new to me. #origami #tessellation

I haven't made many tessellations but I improvised this one to start 2026. I'm sure someone has done it before, because it's pretty straightforward, but it was satisfying to create something "new"—at least for me—in a genre I haven't explored much. #origami #morigami #tessellation

A headshot of me with a pentomino tiling mosaic - this version shows the original 6x12 grid, and each layer of recursive tiling.
A headshot of me with a pentomino tiling mosaic - this version shows only the final mosaic with mini pentomino tiles
Which is better, artistically, to see the layers of fractal pentomino tiles, or just a sea of mini pentominoes?

A phone case with a tessellation that consists of repeated hexagons made out of 3 rhombi, and each rhombus has a simple smiling face on it
And of note, this is also closely related to my phone case which I also designed in Tile Farm Studio:

"Pinwheel Carpet" - based on a fractal curve that Adam Goucher showed me, which was inspired by the pinwheel tiling defined by Charles Radin. It's described in Chapter 4 of my book, The Family Tree of Fractal Curves": www.fractalcurves.com/familytree/4...

The same seamless Penrose tiling as last time, but I changed the tip of the dart to split up the center into 5 separate pebbles instead of a ring when they are placed symmetrically. The second picture shows it zoomed in. No AI was used for this.

Getting closer to seamless Penrose tiles with rocks. You can see there are discontinuities, but they're internal to the tiles where they can be fixed with a little artistry. Too late to do that tonight. Note that I started with a real photo, not AI.

More careful analysis of matching regions in seamless kite and dart Penrose tiles. I adjusted the boundaries so they are more evenly split between kites and darts. The figure in the lower left shows the constraints on length and angle.
#penrose #tessellation #seamless #inkscape
I will post this with little explanation since it's mostly for my own notes. These are Penrose kites and darts split up into the regions that need to match for a seamless tiling. I worked it out before but just had to redo it. Hopefully I will find this next time.

Pair of shoes with a swirling tessellation pattern.
Just arrived in Atlanta with these new shoes that I designed using Tile Farm studio. The tessellation on them is related to the truncated squares Archimedean tiling. If you come by the Tile Farm booth at @nctm.org this week I’ll show you how I made them!

Slight change to continuous stone Penrose tiling. The joins look a little more natural now. I'm going to use a new approach next.

Penrose stone tiling. Still not quite the seamless look I want, but I'm learning as I go. One important part is getting the corners right. I may also be able to do something with a voronoi diagram to place the stones.

Another way to decorate Penrose tiles. Starfish and stylized sand dollar (which isn't really symmetric). I am working on filling in a continuous texture.
I used AI art to generate the pictures but it took work to make them symmetric.
