Duuuuummmbbb I posted earlier about my attempts to improve my site rendering speed by upgrading my blog server's RAM. As I noted in that post, it didn't seem like the changes made much if any difference to the rendering speed in the Safari browser. After much experimentation, I can hereby clarify/correct all of my previous observations and guesses. The rendering speed problem is not related to my server's RAM nor is it the fault of the Safari web browser.

Blog web server upgrade I have completed a simple upgrade to the little box that serves my blogs. I have increased its RAM from 16 gigabytes to 64 gigabytes. I had observed some page loading slow-downs under some conditions recently. My quick review gave me the idea that some of the blogs processes might be a bit starved for memory. Too much of the system's work seemed to be regularly swapped to virtual memory swap (SSD), a condition generally to be avoided.

Blaugust 2025 numbers I had few serious goals for my sophomore Blaugust participation in 2025. Essentially I just wanted to feel like I was involved despite having a low 'blogging' drive. And I achieved that limited goal: mostly by reading the work of other, more energetic participants. Once again I've gathered some 'end of August' numbers illustrating the nuts and bolts of my blogging experience.

Bugs me: Hollywood facial hair This is my greatly overdue response to the Blaugust 'community builder' "Low Stakes Hot Take" challenge. I'm a man. Men generally grow more hair on their face than women. Sometimes they style or trim that facial hair in ways that please themselves or others. Over one year as a retiree I retired on May 31, 2024. That means over a year has passed and I am still happy with the decision. Irene and I have had some tough times during the past year that I'll touch on in this post. But the absence of the pressures of work has made it a lot easier to bounce back. But my post-retirement lifestyle is not the active and adventurous, check-off-your-bucket-list thrill that most retirement advisors seem to recommend.

Weight loss via semaglutide I decided this spring that my non-stop race towards morbid obesity needed to be addressed. I have been trying vainly for a couple of years to slow the process down by gradually increasing my activity levels and making a comically unsuccessful attempt to reduce my calorie intake. But it seemed as if my own willpower was insufficient to the task: the numbers on the scale kept going up.

AI may soon be worthless… I read an article today over on The Register about how AI may be entering its 'model collapse' phase. The basic idea is that more and more of the content that AI ingests to produce its models is, in fact, AI generated. This means that, at its best, AI's responses will decrease in quality. This sounds very bad, and very predictable.

Always escape special characters… I came across this report of a bug with iOS Messages voice transcription feature and found it to be rather interesting. Cutting to the chase: Messages will silently fail if voice transcription tries to use an ampersand ("&") as part of a proper name. The example that started the investigation was a message containing "Dave and Busters". This is the name of a U.S.

Life is a treadmill… Irene and I are not people who exercise much. Yet over the years we have collected a stable of expensive exercise equipment, the primary purpose of which is to collect dust. The only machine that we use somewhat regularly is the treadmill. I would guess that this very expensive PaceMaster Pro VR has about 1,000 km of mostly walking on it over the 20 years or so we've owned it.

Fuse go ‘boom’ I have a healthy fear of high current electrical equipment. Anything over an amp and I'm looking for a way to disconnect the mains and insulate myself. I don't mess with microwaves or the internals of old CRTs without serious trepidation. But some people are built different... like this guy, on the Youtube channel "Photonicinduction", who demonstrates how to destroy a 5000 amp fuse...

Just carrying on… This has been an interesting year so far. I've posted some fairly lengthy diatribes expressing my thoughts and feelings. But I am just a powerless voice in the woods of western Canada, so shaking my fist at the sky is more a bit of personal therapy than any kind of action towards solution. Spending time My days since retirement have been very relaxed. I don't fret too much about what I do or do not do, I enjoy an afternoon nap most days, and I wake up around 8:00 am if I feel like it. I rarely feel rushed. "Mañana" is my favourite word. But I think I have recently hit a new peak of 'doing nothing' behaviour.

Trumpcession… I have been pondering what to write about 'Liberation day' since April 2- the day itself. Trump unleashed the stupidest tariff war, writing off over six trillion dollars of stock market value in the two days that followed. The stock market isn't the economy but any time the stock market drops 10% in two days it is time to be concerned.

Trailer fittings I purchased a cargo trailer a few weeks back shortly after working out my plans for having one. It is a basic 7 foot wide, 12 foot long, 6'6" tall box on wheels with a cargo ramp on the back and a human-sized door on the side. I got it home from Kelowna on March 10th and have been assembling a few bits and bobs for it since then.

Fresh Air… I received my new MacBook Air on Friday, and finished migrating my configuration to it a few hours later. This 2025 model replaces the 2020 version I've been using happily as my primary 'browsing' computer. And so far at least I'm happy with the upgrade. The new MacBook Air is clearly faster (about 20 times faster than my old Intel based Air if you believe Apple) and has a few nice improvements like a better camera.

Happy WordPress Anniversary?! I've been doing something akin to 'blogging' on the Internet for quite a few years. I don't have an exact date that I started and the definition of 'blogging' is kind of tenuous. But my notes indicate that I began sharing my thoughts and opinions on the web sometime around 1998 or 1999. Every once in a while, though, I get some reminder of the durability of this strange pastime of mine.

Telus broke my network…and fixed it again Short version: Telus installed an upgraded network device. First it broke our landline phone, then our inbound network connectivity thereby disconnecting my blogs. I spent hours on the phone with Telus support, and fixed one of those problems myself despite their 'help'. The phone still didn't work, then a really good Telus technician came and solved all the problems..

Planned outage: Saturday, February 15 I will be bringing down my blog server on Saturday to re-organize my server rack to fit in a new rack-mounted UPS. I am not setting a specific time, but hopefully no more than two or three hours sometime in the afternoon. I'll update this post when the outage is complete.

So much for 99% uptime… The little server in my basement that runs all my blogs has been down since February 8th. I finally got it back up and running today and, after correcting a few hiccups, the blogs are back up as of February 12th at 10:15 PM Pacific. What went wrong? And why did it take so long to repair? Well... that's a bit of an interesting story, but only if you are technically minded.
