I've been trying to make myself a walking cane that suits my height, needs and fundamental lack of grounding in reality, and they keep turning into Daredevil's Billy Club...
Given there's not a four story building within about 3 miles of me, I suspect I might not need the swinging rope bit […]

A wooden walking stick of Autumn Olive, with a pigskin wrap over the handle and a carved face on the top. Some have said it looks a bit like me.
While puttering with walking sticks, I ended up with one with an oval disc on the end—where it was sawn from the trunk. I realized that it looked rather plain and unbalanced, but that I had an old little head that I carved many years ago that would just fit. And thus… #woodworking #walkingsticks

A beggar holding a walking stick with a peculiar type of grip, with a “V” below the hand and a knob above. It would appear to provide a secure grip without requiring a tight grip.
I really want to try this style. It looks like it would provide a very supportive grip. #woodworking #walkingsticks #canes
The classic cane handle is a “L” or “T” at the top of the shaft. Good if you’re going to be putting weight downward, but not so good for striding. Some folks with arthritis find them uncomfortable.
A ball fineal on a walking stick can provide a bit of counterweight and move the balance point up, as well as prevent the stick from flying out of your hand. For canes, they look good but don’t give a terribly good grip.
My favorite is the thumb stick. With the thumb hung over the notch, you can relax your grip but still be secure.
The classic pilgrim staff usually has two knobs, one on which to rest the hand and one on top, but is also illustrated with more or in different arrangements. It also served as a tent pole, lever, shoulder pole, and defensive weapon; you could write a dissertation on the variations.
Probably the biggest difference among walking sticks is the handle. The classic straight stick works fine, but I find it hard on my wrist. My favorite is the thumb stick, which allows a loose grip without it flying out of your hand. #woodworking #walkingsticks #sticks
Three pilgrims walk along with staves. Too dense a wood will stress your hand/wrist and slow your stride. Too light and you lose the pendulum effect, again making your hand and wrist work harder. Finding the right balance point makes for a more comfortable stick.
There seems to be a conception among new stick makers that heavy/dense wood is best. Unless you’re making a cudgel, consider something in the middle. Dense enough so it doesn’t bend/vibrate, light enough for you have comfortable grip/control. Like Autumn Olive, Hickory. #woodworking #walkingsticks
An elderly man leans on a classic cane in size and shape. Its length allows one step before it must be lifted and placed in sync with the weaker leg.
A pilgrim hikes with a classic pilgrim’s staff. It is long enough to allow two steps before it is picked up and placed. I sometimes refer to this as a “striding stick” as the pendulum motion allows you to set a steady stride.
Fred Astaire dancing with a prop cane. Not my thing.
Zzz…Sorry, must’ve dozed off.
Some terminology. When I say cane I’m thinking of something sized and balanced to bear weight one step at a time. A walking stick (or staff or wading stick) is sized and balanced for up to two steps at a time and may or may not bear weight. #woodworking #walkingsticks
A grizzled old man (who bears absolutely no resemblance to your correspondent) leans on a straight walking stick.
My lawyers advise that I should say I’m not talking about actual assistive medical devices (or insects). I’m not a therapist or biomedical engineer (or entomologist). If you medically need a cane or crutch, follow your medical professional’s guidance. #woodworking #walkingsticks.
#Walkingsticks? Why yes, I have a bit to say about walking sticks. They are quite popular on the #woodworking ‘net, particularly YouTube vids about turning closet poles into polyurethaned closet poles wrapped in paracord (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Scattershot opinions to follow.

Katydid with lime-green and black/gray markings that resemble a clump of flat lichen that's fallen on a leaf - precisely what I thought it was until I noticed that it had moved UP the leaf!
Very skinny green stick insect with brown legs and brown body bands resting against a tree trunk with moss.
Mossy green katydid with fantastical bumps and spines that is a near perfect match for the moss it is resting on and eating.
Elegant leafy green praying mantid with lobed extensions on its legs and tan wings.
#Katydids #Tettigoniidae were the #crypsis kings along w/ the #stick #insects #Phasmidae. Many #walkingsticks were also brightly colored, which is characteristic of species that taste bad. That association may need to be learned by a predator following an unpleasant meal! #Ecuador #Sumaco
Ben and I have recently gotten into making staffs out of sticks we find! They come out so beautifully.
