Mature Great Blue Heron wades in the water while looking for a meal. It is a large, long-necked bluish gray bird with white and black accents and a long sharp bill- great for snatching little fish from the shallows.
We had a delightful, albeit frosty, time at #EdwinBForsytheNationalWildlifeRefuge. This wonderful Great Blue Heron is my #BirdOfTheDay for the theme #waterwings.

The killdeer is a plover with brown upperparts, white underparts, and two distinct black bands across the upper breast. It has a rufous rump visible in flight. The face is brown marked with black-and-white patches, and a red ring surrounds a dark eye with a dark bill. The legs are pinkish.
