Color photo. Trunk of a tree with bark peeled away (part of a natural process). The trunk fills the image area. Bits of gray bark edged with reddish color remain but are dotted irregularly on the flesh of the tree, which is exposed and is camel brown.
The exfoliated bark of the Chinese elm (or lacebark) suggests images, much like clouds in the sky. I see a paw print and a bald man leaning out a second-story window to yell at someone below. What do you see?

Quite a few birds can mimic human speech – but did you know that both a beluga whale and a harbor seal have tried their flippers at impersonation?

Did you know the grasshopper mouse hunts bark scorpions and shrugs off their venom? They also howl into the night, with locals calling them the “werewolf mouse!”

Came across these dark cup-looking mushrooms on an old log, and they even look mysterious. The forest really has its dramatic moments.

Did you know that there’s a (mostly) vegetarian spider? It steals the Beltian bodies (food packages) produced by acacia plants to attract ants!

Models of locust swarms suggest they may be driven by cannibalism. Those at the front flee those behind them, while stragglers desperately try to keep up – getting isolated is the quickest way to get eaten!

Pocket sharks are small enough to fit in a pouch, but they’re named for the organic pockets on their bodies… meanwhile, the giant freshwater stingray can be the size of a medium dingy and is the largest freshwater fish that's ever been caught!

Dolomedes scriptus, the striped fishing spider, a giant as far as New England arachnids go. They walk on water! They dive underwater! They eat fish! Yes! Great, ok. Moving on. ⬇️

A deep maroon striped flower with three "petals" (they're actually sepals) and large green lily leaves with purple splotches.

A cluster of ghost pipe flowers growing out of the leaf litter. Single bell-shaped white blossoms on each upright stem look somewhat like blueberry blossoms with a circle of yellow teeth in the middle. Light pink stem. Black highlights make the plant look like it's going through a punk rocker goth phase.
Two flowering ghost pipes growing together with blossoms facing in opposite directions.
A cluster of flowering ghost pipes pushing the leaf litter up from the ground as they emerge.
A stout ghost pipe blossom.
This thread is nothing but photos of ghost pipe, Monotropa uniflora. A parasitic plant that's common enough up here, but it's become properly endangered in most of its range due to people poaching it for "alternative medicine". #monotropa #weirdnature #parasites #naturesky #bloomscrolling

Pale yellow pinesap. Multiple blossoms dangle from its raceme. In the background is another pinesap that's a little further along with mostly spent flowers.
Pinesap with a darker pink coloring. It's past its flowering stage and is in the fruiting stage. People often misidentify pinesap at this stage as Hypopitys lanuginosa due to the red stems, but pinesap turns increasingly red as it ages.
Dried pinesap is fully brown in color. The fruit has fully ripened and it's gone to seed.
Pinesap in fruiting stage.
A pile of pinesap photos, Monotropa hypopitys, a parasitic plant that doesn't typically crop up until a forest has lasted at least 90 years without a major disturbance.
