Second-highest peak in the Harz Mountains, Wurmberg, in the distance. Dead spruce stump with strange, crescent-shaped branch jutting out in the foreground.

The National Park part of the Harz is essentially a vast rewilding project. Climate change has resulted in more frequent droughts. Sap flow in the spruce monocultures is reduced, and with less resin, the trees are more susceptible to bark-beetle infestations.

Three highest peaks in the Harz Mountains. Left to right: Brocken (1st), Achtermann (3rd), Wurmberg (2nd). Dead spruce stalks dominating landscape. Spruce monoculture has been wiped out by bark-beetle infestation - ultimately the result of climate change.
