a day for the botany nerds amongst us
the tiny Muscari cf heldreichii, perhaps an as-yet-undescribed endemic
the critically endangered, endemic Salix kaptarae, described as recently as 2019
and the iconic Tulipa saxatilis up on the Omalos plateau.

a couple of gory highlights from our sunny day on the Akrotiri peninsula, in the fleshy form of Cytinus hypocistis, (ant-pollinated, parasite & member of the Rafflesiaceae) & the always wonderful Dragon Arum, filling the hillsides with the aroma of rotting sheep...

What a stonking bird!
Fire salamander
Roe deer
Montagu's harrier
Brown hare
Despite my trip to France being a touristy trip, apart from the moths I did see some other wildlife during my holiday, here are a few
Only ever seen one Fire Salamander (deep in a woodland in Slovenia) and that was a real "red letter day". Nice oneπ

Pleasantly surprised by diversity of waterfowl on Croatian coast recently with multiple Black-throated Divers, Black-necked and Slavonian Grebes plus mixed flock of 25 Garganeys and 6 Ferruginous Ducks seen from hotel balcony at Tucepi. All very distant though #NaturalistAbroad
The Streamer (Anticlea derivata). NFY.
I was able to add five more NFY #moths to my meagre species total for the year this morning, thanks to a slight increase in temperature: Streamer, Common Pug, Waved Umber, Swallow Prominent, and Depressaria Radiella. #teammoth

Big uptick in moths in SW Hants last night, possibly helped as much by an enforced bulb change as better conditions.
