A word combination I never foresaw myself using, 'Tipulid orgy' but HERE WE ARE 😂 This began as 3 male Crane Flies of genus #Toxorhina (family #Limoniidae) attempting to mate with one female, but finally settled down to a #MenageEtTrois...

Most surprising find @ bee aggregation '26 were lots of thick-headed #flies emerging! They're parasitoids of adult bees, grabbing them mid-air to inject eggs into the abdomen. Eww but cool! (I guess not if you're a bee 😂) Here's one on a flower: flic.kr/p/2ocMhfV

People hate flies, but don't realize getting rid of flies would get rid of
- chocolate (pollinator is a fly) and other plants
- poop and decaying corpses everywhere (bacterial decomposition slower/smelly)
- deweeders and pest parasitoids

Aus diesem Knäuel hängt ein Fadenende heraus, das zu einem angefangenen Strickstück führt. Das Insekt besitzt transparente gepunktete Flügel und einen auffällig langen Saugrüssel. Technik: Koloriertes Aquarell.

A fabulous golden fluffy fly sits on a nice fresh soggy cowpat.

Scathophaga stercoraria or Yellow Dungfly. ‘Yellow’ just doesn’t do it justice. It’s a glorious, fabulous gold and if it was a small mammal everyone would want one as a pet. They’re so fluffy!

Moth flies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Psychodinae) look and fly like tiny moths but are flies. They're also called drain flies or sewage flies because they're often seen in bathrooms and near other septic lines. Their larvae feed on organic sludge that builds up in drains. Fantastic Fly Friday, the Anastrepha Fruit Fly Today I have a beautiful Fruit Fly (Genus Anastrepha) to show you. I found this specimen when visiting Tulum, Quintana Roo, MX in late January. The place we stay in Tulum has a swimming pool virtually no one ever uses. I love this place so much because I almost always have the pool entirely to myself. Everyone else is at the beach!

Look for future posts about my favorite group of insects, the Diptera, when you follow me for Fanastic Fly Fridays!
